Can a GP stop your medication without any consultation?

Not sure if this the correct place to post...? But hopefully someone can help?

Question: Can a GP stop your medication without any consultation?

I was prescribed Tadalafil several years ago by my original Doc for ED. This medication has continued monthly ever since, very successfully.

Recently, (several months ago) I was assigned to a new GP, which I visited October, 2012. During, the ‘consultation’ he told me that I was not entitled to Tadalafil. I urged him to speak with my original Doc. Four months later I presumed that the matter had been settled, as Tadalafil was still listed on my repeat prescription – until now – Tadalafil has been removed.

The, ‘new’ GP has now stopped this, ‘repeat’ medication, without any communication with me. Can he do this? I am sure you will appreciate that this is having a significant impact on the quality of my life and that of my wife.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest booking an appointment with your GP and asking for a review of your ED treatment options. If he doesnt provide the service then ask for a referral to the ED clinic at your local hospital or an Andrology service as part of the PCT if you have one. Your entitlement will depend upon your condition. There are NICE guidelines and depending on the route cause will determine what you are entitled to. Some PCT's have decided fro example not to prescribe Tadalafil on costs grounds but you can get other medication. There are various causes that entitle you to free medication for ED such as Prostate Cancer , but again some PCT's are starting to be funny about prescribing long term these drugs. First step i think is to go see your GP. He may want to check that your ED is still there and if so then he may prescribe.

Drugs like Tadafil are only available on the NHS if you have a defined disorder that is causing ED - and yes a GP can stop a perscription as very often the rules change. You can, however buy Tadafil (and others) privately. Talk to your GP.

Certainly your GP will review your medication from time to time, as does the (ex-) PCT prescribing 'police' and right that they do review medicines by and large.

If you have been prescribed tadalafil on an NHS prescription erroneously - ie you don't fit on of the 9 criteria dictated by The DoH in 1998 - then I guess your GP will see fit to correct this, though s/he should be discussing this with you and be offering a private script for the appropriate medication.

If you are indeed entitled to NHS scripts then your GP may want to change you over to generic 'Viagra' - sildenafil- as this is now off patent and much cheaper for the NHS on a regular NHS script.

It's all about spending yours and my NHS budget cost-effectively

Nonetheless I do feel for you having your erection lifeline snatched away!

Do let us know what pans out.
