Hi I wonder if anyone can answer me a question? My boyfriend was diagnosed with meniere's disease in June this year, has probably had it for the last 13 years but was mis diagnosed as having a tumour on the inner ear, which is quite common as the syptoms are very similar. He has had about 3 bad 'drop attacks' in the last 4 months and regularly has a 'brain fog' day. My question is has anyone noticed that their dizzy, light headed symptoms are triggered by floresant light??? When we go to the supermarket every week we only have to be in there for about 10 mins and he feels awful light headed, disorientated, and basically he needs to get out of the shop. It isn't just supermarkets either anywhere that has floresant light which is most places!!! Would appreciate any feedback. :silly:
 hi i have menieres aswell and unfortunately shopping is a nightmare. i avoid supermarkets as much as poss and do shopping on line which isnt great been sat at a computer!
Supermarkets can be a problem with Meniere's. With the reduction or loss of information from the affected ear regarding postional sense the brain adapts to using sight and proprioception (muscle sense) to balance.
The loss of horizon in supermarkets combined with the type of light often used confuses the eyes. Furthermore, the floors are often lightly patterned mosaics which have little 'depth' to the eye. Thus confusion occurs. To help, look up to the highest point and try to slow right down.
Many branches of Tescos now have removed the awful flourescent tubes.
hi,
i've just been diagnosed with menieres, yesterday actually, after 18 months of being fobbed off. Cant say that the hospital or the medical centre have been helpful in anyway what so ever, if it wasnt for web sites like this i'd still be sat thinking what the heck in menieres, as i'd never heard of it before. reading through the different threads has been very reassuring, i am in fact not going completely loopy afterall. Supermarket, shopping malls and computers with the flickering lighting has particulary struck a chord. when i asked my doctor why this could be she looked at me like she'd stood in something nasty. why is there so much ignorance out there?! i sympathise with all those you feel that it would be so much easier to wear a sign or a badge i feel like screaming 'i'm not drunk - I'M DIZZY' i'm fed up of explaining just to be made to feel like i'm imagining it. tell that to my poor boyfriend the countless number of times he's scraped me of the floor.
is there such a thing as a medical warning tag for menieres? it would be a good idea should a member of the public (or the police in the matter) find you mid attack. (i refer back to the drunk thing)
i've rabbitted enough, i'm going to keep forging on with my life the way i want it and not let this depressing disease effect me more than it has to.
be strong everyone out there, and to the friends and family - your support and understanding is more appreciated than you'll ever know.
I find any flickering light a problem and find Christmas a difficult time as the lights can bring on an attack, christmas trees, disco balls, disco lights ect. I wear dark glasses to help, even if it does look a little silly.
