I have been using Hylo-Forte 2% for 18months, and Simple eye ointment before I go to bed. Recently I have been getting a very dry mouth at night, Is there a connection., and has anyone experienced the same.symptoms after long term use of eye drops.
Probably is the drops, they do slide down the throat ,into the sinus and into the mouth All the drops I tried gave me a hard time ,because I was allergic to the
preservatives . Finally found Optrex for dry eyes NO PROBS
Thanks Jacqueline for you interest. I am also allergic to every eye drop the Eye Hospital has prescribed for me. Hylo-Forte is a preservative free one, and suits my eye very well, but I have to use them every 2 hours, so there is a quantity going down my nose and into my mouth. I would just like to hear if anyone else has had this experience. I do intend to discuss it with my consultant at my next appointment. But I do like to have a bit of knowledge about this. This allows me to ask more questions.
I was prescribed the preservative free drops, same rejection a pharmatist
told me that even preservative free drops ,still contain some preservative
to bind all the ""bits "" together

You didn't say why you are doing drops .Are they for Dry Eyes??
Yes, Hylo-Forte, is for dry eyes. It is one of the 'stronger' ones. I understand from my consultant, that it is the preservative in eye drops, which are very often, the cause of problems. It certainly was in my case. Your Pharmisist is wrong, there are quite a few preservative free eye drops available, but maybe only on prescription. If you read the label, it does state the ingredients, and in some cases, will indicate if those ingredients are for a 'preservative' action. There only 4 ingredients in Hylo-Forte, and only 3 in the Simple Eye Ointment which I use before bedtime. Not sure it you have consulted your doctor about this. Often, an optician, is the best 'port of call'. They will write to your doctor, to ask that you be referred to an eye specialist. This overrides the doctor who often thinks it is minor condition. But of course it is not if you suffer it. The bottom line is your eyes need to be lubricated to protect your cornea. Hope this helps you Jacqueline.
Ihave been to the eye clinic four times, seen the eye consultant once, and am due to see him again next week .My G.P has not been involved,
as surgeries do not have the special equipment needed to do eye testing.
There are lots of preservative free drops, but there is a particular
addative , Sodium hydroxide which causes me irritation.
I have already been down the roads you suggest, and spent four
fruitless days chasing eye drops ( consultant prescribed) that had been
withdrawn ,A pharmacist told me about a night ointment that was
totally free of any addatives called Vita -Pos. excellent stuff
I'm not in favour of the ,doctor referal track, there is too long a gap
and when I am in pain. I tend to go to the horses mouth
I find that water washing helps .to lubricate without pain.
Opticians again, are useful. but will not do a"" walk in ""check I'm
afraid that the dreaded appointment system rules almost everywhere. .
Jacqueline,, Sorry I didnt realise that you already had a consultant. Because you talked about Optrex, I just assurmed you were trying to help yourself. The eye drops I use, do not have Sodium Hydroxide in. Vita-pos is good, as it was 'created by the team at Moorfields who specialise in dry eyes. i did see one of that team, a cornea specialist (probably, not allowed to name him here). So it is marvellous when the actual specialist do that, rather than a medical company, who only want to sell a product. No idea where you are, but Southampton Eye hospital, has just opened a Dry eye Clinic. It is run by a dry eye specialist. You may be able to find him/it online.
I got so fed up with the 'appointment system', that you mention. I decided to see my Specilist privately. No I am not rich !!!! But now forgo holidays, and new (2nd hand) car. Anything that will give me extra money. I consider my eyes/sight, more important than those things, and it has been well worth it.
Hi .it's just that I went through a shed load of drops which all caused stinging ,poring eye, and burning. Finally resorted to Optrex dry eye.
as I use their infected drops if I get a sty,again, it works well
The pharmasist that you said was wrong suggested the Vita-pos ,sticky but keeps the eye moist whilst I sleep. I am a cosiderable mileage from
the south coast, but there is a huge walk in eye clinic here with lots of
eye doctors and technicians to hand, and will give a referal to a
consultant if necessary.N.H,S So Iv'e paid for the treatment , so to speak. Private stuff still has to be paid for, NOT cheap If I couldn't
drive it would be the end for me as I go to the coast , East side is
nearest, and Derbyshire is on the doorstep ,and the countryside is
amazing, and I never get bored with it, so .B.B eyes are a must.
Are you getting better ,or is a tear gland op on the cards ??
