Can fluoxetine 20mg work instantly?

Basically I have been on sertraline 100mg for around a year and a half & it just stopped working and I have suffered horrendous anxiety, I have spoken to a councillor from a mental health team who told me I have generalised anxiety disorder basically I worry about everything, what if my kids get ill what if I die what if everything, but seriously extreme anxious & worry, the doctor refused to change my tablets on Thursday, I saw another doctor Friday who changed them to fluoxetine 20mgi took it for the first time this morning and this has been the best day I have had in a long time, could it work so quickly? Anybody else on fluoxetine. Thanks

The medication has not had sufficient time to work so you need to be patient. Generally GPs prefer not to keep taking these types of medication. because of this

Hi Jodie,

Sorry to hear your struggling with anxiety and worrying, I totally sympathise with what your going through I worry about everything my husband and my children dying and me being left alone it's terrifying. I was on fluoxetine 20mg for years but had to come off it as I started to suffer migraine although I did feel it really helped me. They say it takes around six weeks to fully get into your system but if you feel a little better today then that's fab, I hope it continues I hate this dreadful feeling in the pit of my stomach everyday. I can't cry anymore x big love

No, that's not possible. It sounds like you experience a placebo effect.

I think it is possible. I remember day 1 on Fluoxetine was the best day I have had in ages. Laughing, joking and just well calm placebo or not, I had not felt that way in many months.

That's when the side effects started the day after and it was horrendous for about 2 weeks. I often wondered if that was an insight into what it woild be like when the tablets worked finally but I only managed 3 weeks on them before being taken off

I'm hoping that I don't get the side effects with already having the sertraline 100mg well into my system, I hate side effects of these type

Of meds. Horrible 😫
