Can mono cause shakiness or dry mouth?

I'm 16, female, and healthy before being diagnosed with mono in July. My full list of symptoms include: severe fatigue, worsened anxiety, weakness, joint stiffness and sometimes pain, one swollen tonsil, loss of appetite, and nausea occasionally. But now I'm also experiencing mouth dryness when I eat bread, stuffy nose, vaginal dryness, and sometimes my whole body trembles, especially when I'm anxious. My CBC showed nothing abnormal apart from mono and low vitamin D levels, but I'm still extremely worried about all of this. Does anyone know if any of those things, especially the trembling, can be caused by mono? I don't know what else to do since my family thinks I'm just paranoid (which I probably am), and we don't have the money to go in for more tests apart from the regular blood ones assuming my doctor would even approve them. Please help!

No your NOT paranoid, you are suffering with a terrible illness that has the most horrid symptoms,i never realised until I got it,it has ben the worst illness ive ever had, your family need to realise just what a brutal virus this is and how it affects the whole of your body in every way, listen to your body Alle and get as much rest as you can and be kind to yourself, also good vitamins and Olive Leaf Exyract have helped me

Extract that should say !! lol

I agree with Diane...this is a horrid virus and you are not paranoid. While I had an onslaught of 3 viruses (EBV, CMV and Dengue Fever) I am do think I contracted EBV first which resulted in SEVERE dry mouth initially which was so scary. I am on month 9 and still don't have all my salivary gland production back but it is better than what it was. I have also had the trembling and body buzzing which has subsided, however the symptoms have morphed into a slight tremor and upper and lower body weakness. I am so sorry we are all going through this. As hard as it is, do your best to relax as much as possible. Your body has to work through the virus. Rest is so important even though it has been really hard for me. I have had insomnia since March. I hope you are spared!

Take good care,

Kiki

Thank you so much for your advice, Diane.

I sort of blame myself for it stretching on so long and so severely, I was told to rest a lot and drink plenty when I was diagnosed, but instead I ended up dehydrated with no more than 6-7.5 hours sleep at night and no daytime naps. I have been regretting that since the most recent wave of symptoms when it hit me just as hard as it did the first month. If you don't mind me asking, how do you use the extract? Do you take it in pill form, mix it with something, or apply it topically?

Thank you for replying, Kiki.

It makes me sad to see that others are dealing with all of these things too, but it also assures me to know that these symptoms can be normal for the virus. Since these newer symptoms have begun, I have been Googling all types of autoimmune diseases and other things that can cause them and have worked myself onto tears several times over it when I manage to convince myself that I have something even worse than mono. Fortunately, I haven't had any trouble with sleep since the first month so far, instead I sometimes fear that I won't be able to wake up because I feel so exhausted when I fall asleep. I really hope our symptoms will abate soon, this virus is more draining than I ever could have imagined it would be... Have you found anything that can help with the mouth dryness? It really makes it hard to eat even when I do get hungry.

Take care of yourself too!

Hi Alle. Im sorry you have to go through this. I too did experience the body trembling, dry mouth and many other symptoms which thankfully have now passed. The fatigue can be so scary and can relate to your fear of going to sleep and not waking up. In the first 3 month my mum had to move in with me (as i live alone) and Im not ashamed to say there were a few night where I was so scared I wouldnt wake up that she slept next to me. I want to reassure you that what you are experiencing is common and please try to refrain from falling down the Doctor Google rabbit hole ( I too have issues with this still), it does nothing but feed the fear and the virus. Get as much rest as possible and eat health with lots of fruit and veg (dont forget protein), as this will help your body fight off the attacking virus. Wishing you a fast recovery and try not to worry too much, just be mindful. I found meditation helped alot, as well as seeing a natural doct (if you can afford it).

It does make tour body tremor...my hands especially are shaky. My legs turn to jelly sometimes and I go completely wobbly. I had my thyroid checked as an overactive thyroid can give you th3 shakes, but it come clear. I don't know the reason it does it but my blood shows I'm slightly aneamic. I think it's probably just down to the cells and sugar levels in your blood. I just ignore it now.

Hi Alle,

So sorry to hear you've been going through this awful time with mono, I really do empathise having went through the virus a number of years ago and had an equally tough time with it.

I just want to reassure you that things will get better, it is such a frightening and intense illness and when it goes on for months - but I want to reassure you that this is normal and the symptoms you describe absolutely sound normal from my experience of it, and definitely I think trembling / shaking and dry mouth can be very normal with this. Even if it takes a little time still, absolutely you will get better Alle, I felt the same as you and thought it never would at one stage, but it just takes time unfortunately with this thing. I know that doesn't make it any easier to cope each day when feeling so horrible, but just absolutely want you to know that this doesn't last forever and it does go away eventually and you will get back to full health again.

Taking vitamins and herbs can really help, a good strong multi-vitamin per day, higher doses of Vitamin C (1000mg-3000mg per day), B complex vitamin (great for energy levels and nervous system) and immune boosting herbs like siberian ginseng, echinicea, oregano. Also taking a Vitamin D supplement a good idea if low on that and drinking lots of water.

Thinking about you Alle and hang in there - you ARE going to get better I truly believe that from my own horrible experience of this thing.

I too have become very clumsy and shakey I’ve broken so many glasses dishes you name it ... this is an awful illness but you’re young enough to get over it quickly !

If you do what they say which is rest low stress eat well and hydrate .

Yes I’ve had the insomnia too .... fall asleep ok but wake up like 10 times  a night can’t nap due to the horrid anxiety this awful disease causes .... and wake up so depressed and anxious. I’m on 50 different vitamins . Something has gotta give !!!!

hey insomnia sister.....I've been on sleeping meds since March 1....in my normal state I take zero medication.....so depressing! I am hoping my age isn't working against me.... I am 48 but was in great shape in January before this awful state of affairs. I just don't feel like I am getting better but I am trying to keep my spirits up as you should too! Yes, something's gotta give!

Hi Alle,

I really feel for you. I was working in Jamaica when my dry mouth symptom started and I was so freaked out. Like you I consulted Dr. Google and thought I was either diabetic or had sjogrens symdrome, as those seemed to be the only things I found that would explain the condition. When I had to leave my job soon after because I became so sick I went directly to the ER once my plane landed back In Toronto and got tested for autoimmune disorders - all negative. I also bought all the Biotene products out there which helped slightly. Biting a lemon also stimulates the glands. It's been 6 months since I've had that symptom which came alongside a burning, swollen and white tongue. All these symptoms are better but not 100%. I am hopeful that I will continue to improve - you will too....

Kiki

Hi Kiki,

My biggest concerns were Sjogren's and MS when I began googling, but my mom has agreed to let my eye doctor do a test for Sjogren's to hopefully rule those out - or calm my anxiety at the very least. I was also wondering, did your dry mouth or white tongue ever affect your sense of taste? I burnt my tongue a few days ago and had my sinuses mess up a bit, which is what I initially blamed for my lowered taste, but over the course of today, I've realized that only certain tastes are hindered. I can taste sweet things fine so far and most savoury or salty things, but for some reason, I can barely taste my tea or fries even though they were both made the same as usual.

My legs have done the same thing too several times, especially when I'm really tired. Blood sugar could have to do with it since I haven't been able to eat much for the last two weeks. I hope these issues stop soon for both of us.

Hi Craig,

Thank you so much for your advice and encouragement. When I first got this, I had never anticipated it would cause so many symptoms or take so much out of me. I don't remember having ever been so stressed or feeling so awful before in my life before. I'll have to find some of those herbs next time I'm out - I'm willing to try anything to ease or shorten this horrible virus.

It truly is a horrible feeling to have all of these symptoms... I've been having a lot of trouble eating lately which I think may be setting me back even further in my recovery, but I really hope we both feel better soon and that these symptoms go away.

Hi Sweebee,

I'm really glad to hear that your symptoms have passed. It's such a draining virus, I've never felt so weak and anxious before. I don't think there are any natural doctors nearby, but I've been considering asking my doctor about a few herbal pills and teas I've read about. I've never done meditation before, but I'm definitely gonna have to try it now - even the smallest bit of peace it could bring would be a blessing.

Hi Alle,

Oh I know this virus is so horrible and draining, I never expected it to go the way it did for me either or last as long. I know how frightening and depression and awful is it to live through it - still thinking about you Alle and absolutely want you to know that everything you describe sounds normal for mono to me and is it unfortunately normal for it to go on this length of time - it took me a few months longer than where you are now to get better but I did get better and you will too, plus you being younger hopefully is an advantage in that recovery I'm hoping will be quicker!

I do want to reassure you that having the diagnosis of mono is a good thing in terms of knowing what's going on, and it's not likely to be MS or Sjorgens or anything like that, but I do understand your fears and worries and I was the same too thinking 'surely all this can't be from mono?'. But I found out that it could and it was, and that with some time and just being kind to your body, resting and not putting yourself under any pressure or expectations right now, things absolutely will get better!!

Thinking about you and remember just managing and coping with each day is enough for now, getting through each day is a massive achievement with this thing. And you will get better!! I truly believe that.

Craig

Hi Kiki,

Just wanted to say still thinking about you and sorry to hear things still been so hard lately. Goodness knows I know you've been through a double triple and quadruple whammy of things, just really hoping and praying for a turning point really soon. Have hit a hard time myself and finding it difficult to cope and keep positive too, we must just not give in and cope with each day as best we can, even if it's only small things we can manage or cope with right now. Praying for God's help and intervention in your circumstances Kiki, hang in there.
