Can my flare up cause a migraine?

Hey guys! I was diagnosed with IBS 4 years ago. I've had really high anxiety the past month with panic attacks and stress and I was having a lot of loose stools along with abdominal cramping. 2 days ago I ate pretty crappy at a birthday party and I have been constipated every since. I've also had a killer migraine and completely bloated with the burps every few minutes or so. Is there any way the constipation and flare up of my IBS could cause a migraine and rapid heart rate? I'm on 20mg of citalopram and it worked in the past with my IBS. However it's been 5 weeks since I started on the citalopram again. I just woke up and had some oatmeal and black coffee to hopefully get things moving but so far nothing. Any home remedies and is the constipation triggering my migraine? Any advice would be wonderful!! Thanks in advancesmile

Food colouring can set off migraines. Purple and red are often the culprit.

Constipation will be made worse by less fibre and more processed foods. Raisins work for me on oats N More. I also take a wheat based probiotic which helps.

Stress will make your attacks worse. I crochet to relax my brain which helps.

Hope some helps.

Think plum juice and dried plums. For gases i have been taking beano it has help a lot

Yes, you've identified the cause of the flare up.

It will pass once your diet is back on an even keel. Severe headaches associated with IBS are quite common.

That's crazy that you said purple food coloring. The birthday cake was zebra print with purple all over it!! My mouth was actually purple afterwards! I had no idea!! The oatmeal seemed to work...my stomach isn't hurting as bad so I think it got things moving. Not going anywhere today just incase!! Thanks so much Sue!!

I actually took some phazyme to help with the bloating. Seems to be helping the pressure!! I will try plum the! Thank you Belinda!

Hey Jan! I had no idea the migraine could be caused by the IBS and constipation. I ate some oatmeal and can feel my tummy gurgling. I think. It's safe to say I'm staying home today and preparing. Lol!! Thank you for the help Jan!!

Hope u feel better drink lots of water too.

After I have an attack I always have a migraine to follow, like an IBS chaser. It is horrible. If it is the weekend I do not mind as I can get in bed but if it is the morning on a work day that is the worst. Having to sit there for the majority of the day with a migraine and if it very severe before I need to leave I may not even get out of the door because if it is a severe migraine I can't drive. My body shuts down and I start behaving like Leonardo Dicaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Oh I am!! It's definitely been helping

Oh wow astro!! That sounds terrible!! I rarely get migraines but when i do the only thing i want to do all day is sleep. I've basically been laying in bed all weekend. I napped off and on all day yesterday because of the migraine and bloating. Just felt awful. The top pressure in my stomach has gone down which usually means things are starting to flow again. Lol. Trying not to be too graphic.

Hello Ashley I have always had migraines and spent quite a long time in hospital when I was 15 having tests. I had lumber punctures and all sort of jabs. When I was younger the pain was more intense I would punch the wall in frustration and I had to have a doctor out who would sedate me, cue The Ramones I wanna be sedated. Luckily as I have grown older the pain has become more manageable. The only tablets which ever cured me once started were these huge tablets an ex colleague used to steal, with her knowledge, these tablets and give to me when I was having a migraine. No idea what they were but worked a treat. Without those tablets it is lying down in a dark room and sleep. That is good re: flowing. It is difficult but sometimes it helps.

I'm so sorry you've been struggling with migraines for such a long time. That's truly awful. I can't even imagine. Like I said, I rarely get them but when I do i just want to cry. I sure hope your migraines are getting better, atleast more manageable.

Thank you and that is very nice to hear. Yes I use to cry with pain when I was younger. I looked like a scene from Scanners. Yes much more manageable although my close friends who have known me a long time say how bad were you before . I have side effects with mine so I will lose co-ordination and my speech starts to slur which is a sign that I need to be lying down somewhere. I have had to pull over on the sides of roads for a sleep. Once as a teenager I pulled over having no idea where I was but I could feel my co-ordination going and woke about 5am to screaming and police sirens. I had only pulled over in a notorious part of Salford for a sleep. I know crazy. Those days are few and far between but they do still happen but I am better than I was. I used to just keel over and blackout and with each incident I could not drive for 3 years. Touch wood I have not had a blackout for a long time but friends would rescue me from car parks where they would find me lying on the floor. I would keep a note on me saying who I was in the hope the person who found me would call an ambulance and to their credit most did so I spent many a time waking up in a strange hospital bed with no memory of how I arrived there and that was with no alcohol. I was a sickly teenager but slightly Improved now.

Hi Astro', that's not funny for you, but the leonardo bit is very funny!!!lol!!! I just saw a bit of that film on tv a few days ago!! xx

Hi Ashley, sorry you are suffering hun. stress/anxiety is a big trigger for most ibs sufferers including myself, & can also be a trigger for migraines which are equally draining to deal with when they strike. You mention the constipation -  I know its a natural reaction, but try not to strain when you are on loo as this will make an "already there" migraine more painful.  Is there anything in your control that you can do to reduce your current stress/anxiety or is it more generalised than a specific issue causing stress/anxiety at present?  xx

All I can say is I'm sorry you went through that for so long. Did they ever find out what was causing them? That sounds awful. I can't even imagine the intensity of one that bad let alone having them a lot. Goodness. I'm glad they have improved though!

Hey looloo!! I have been taking citalopram for the stress and clonezepam for the panic attacks. I'm not sure exactly what my triggers are. I just put a lot on my shoulders. I strained a little too hard the other day so dealing with that one painful side effect if you catch my drift, and the migraines finally went away. Just slept and drank lots of water, ate oatmeal and drank black tea and things finally went south. Lol thank you for your advice!!

Never touch coffee its annoys your bowel. Are you in pain? With constipation I do a lot of walking and drimk water.

Hello looloo I am used to it.  I do my best.  "Where's the ludes?"  Yes it was a good film and although it made me laugh it also annoyed me. He should have got longer.
