Can you have pmr without stiffness.

Can anybody tell me can you have pain in shoulders and hips without stiffness with pmr .

i vote for yes. sometimes i have pain and i walk like a duck. sometimes i just have pain; sometimes i just walk like a duck. its a crap shoot.

if you are asking about onset symptoms, then i have to say it depends. my onset pain was so bad that i dont recall stiffness; the pain totally domineered everything. my previous response was based on how i feel now, 2 years later.

not sure....my pain/stiffness is mostly in hands/fingers/wrists and shoulders/forearms....not so much hips...but DEFINITELY I've got stiffness in a Major way!!

l had stiffness along with shoulder and upper arm and wrist pain but l don't think you have to.

In my case the pain was so bad I didn't notice the stiffness if there were any.

in the beginning , before being diagnosed, there was very strong pain in my hip/upper leg area as well as shoulders and back. PMR pain is bilateral, although it may not be as strong on both sides. It became progressively worse and I could not turn in bed or get out of bed on my own. At that point PAIN was so dominant that I was not aware of any stiffness. But you need to get proper diagnosis, because some other conditions can have similar symptoms. In a process of diagnosing PMR, they will try to eliminate all other possible reasons for muscle pain until you are left with "just" PMR . There is NO direct test to diagnose PMR .

i had severe pain, but would not particularly call it stiffness. it also was NOT worse in the morning than at night.

I'm with Ptolemy, initially my pain was so bad, i could not differentiate with stiffness. As I got more into the the disease, I Recognized the stiffness. Example, unable to go through a drive-through ATM because I had no range of motion in my shoulder .

Then I realized if I could walk briskly in the morning, my symptoms would mitigate.

Thank you for your replys

Two pies you crack me up with your answer. I definitely wattle and I think I wall all the time everywhere I go.

thanks! at least im not alone!

I am still not sure I have PMR - I had no pain in shoulders and arms - just in hips and legs with pain and stiffness which decreased as I walked around but came back again after i had sat down for a period of time.....having said that I couldn't turn around/over in bed easily but that was mainly because of my lower half.....but it seems everyone is different here, in varying degrees of symptoms.....a very curious disease indeed....x

Are you taking pred? If so did it help?

Probably. Everyone experiences PMR differently and what you call pain I might call stiffness - the pain restricts what I can do and so I think I am stiff. Like the pain/stiffness post exercise.

I have no pain or stiffness in my shoulders/hips, which is what I had when diagnosed with pmr in May this year, and am now doing the DSNS method to go from 10 to 9mg. However, I have a lot of hand stiffness which takes till about 2pm to settle. I'm unsure whether this is the pmr because I am reducing, or is it osteo pain because of being a physio for almost 40 years doing massage etc. so I know that I have age related changes in knuckles etc but it never gave me pain before. Anyone had similar? PS I too was on spit dose of a third at night and remainder in morning, but since getting to 10 or 9 I have dropped the pm dose.

I get hand pain if I am flaring - whatever the reason for the flare. It really is a sign for me that the dose is a bit low.

how high do you go back up and how long do you stay there before trying to reduce again? and when you do reduce, do you go back to where you were or do you start all over again from your increase? thanks!

my arms and shoulders rarely are affected. M y PMR is almost always pain in the buttocks, groin, hips, hamstrings and quads.

When first diagnosed with blood markers was to high was put on 40 of pred and was told to reduse by 10 every 2 weeks i felt very ill but doc done more bloods and they came back ok he then said he didnt think the immflamation was pmr after all .and told me to take pain killers that doesent work. that was 4months ago still in pain all the time in neck shoulders and hips and buttocks.
