carers and universal credit

my brother inlaw is dying, he wants me to give up work and look after my sister.

do i claim carers or universal credit first or do i do them both together?

It’s not easy to answer this without more information .
Does your sister get DLA or PIP or AA ? or has it been claimed?
If not you can’t claim Carers Allowance at all.
You also need to see if your in UC area as not everyone is yet, there’s a checker on gov .uk, it might be Income Support top up to Carers Allowance .
I think you need all of this info before you make any decisions.

All the best

my sister gets pip and yes it is a full uc area

Hi,

All areas re now full UC area and have been since middle of December 2018. New claims for Income Support are no longer possible in all areas. Your sister also needs to be claiming the daily living part of PIP for anyone to claim carers allowance for looking after her.

I’m sorry but your question doesn’t really make any sense. You say your brother in law is dying but he’s still working and he wants to give this up to care for your sister? Is this correct? If so then is he sure he’s able to look after your sister, if he’s dying? I’m sorry if that sounds so morbid.

UC is a means tested benefit and claiming this will depend on savings/capital and household income. You also don’t need to claim Carers allowance to claim the carers element of UC.

I really think that your brother in law needs to get advice from his local CAB or other benefits advice centre before giving up work. They will be able to do a full benefits check with him which is a very difficult thing to do on an internet forum because no one here knows their circumstances.

Hi Denise she says her B in L is not working she is but he wants her to give up working to care for her sister, etc hope your well.

Hi,

That’s not how i read it. It says the B in L is dying and he wants to give up work to look after her sister.

I’m getting there, thanks. Hope you’re well too. x

Hi Alexandria

You have read it correctly but I think she needs face to face help as it sounds complicated.
Hope you’re well

This is what it says am I misreading it?

My brother-in-law is dying, he wants me to give up work and look after my sister.
do i claim carers or universal credit first or do i do them both together

No you’re not misreading it, i thought exactly the same yesterday when i read it. This is why i advised getting advice from their local CAB or other advice centre.

yes im not too bad thank you, waiting for my review to be sorted, like everyone it’s slow, yes i agree they need to maybe speak to McMillan advice Centre

my brother is in hospital, terminally ill. my sister is also disabled

she is claiming pip

he wants me to give up my job to nurse them both til he dies then look after
my sister full time . is it best to claim uc or carers allowance as i would have to claim benefits

This is a very complicated situation and it’s impossible to answer your questions on an internet forum. Claiming a means tested benefits depends on many things. You really need to get a full benefits check from your local CAB, this way you’ll be able to tell the all your circumstances.
