Catheter after hip replacement

had hip op 3 weeks ago happy with result

but had a problem passing water had 3 goes with catheter spend week in hospital sent me home with catheter for last 2 weeks

returned to hospital to day removed catheter gone in retention

in discomfort with catheter feeling depressed not knowing what the out come  will be

now feeling like a wished I did have the surgery

Hi,

There is medication for pain and the surgery to numb the area and anesthesia all combined causes retention in my case. I informed the surgeons before surgery I had retention issue s from all the medication. There is a medication to relax the bladder muscles which can be prescribed and the rentenion is controlled. So much better than a catheter.

Catheters are painful and I had that same issue the first THR 22 years ago. Not easy to cope with hip recovery. I'm surprised that the physician had not prescribed medication designed for retention. Or a least until you recovered enough to get back on your feet. Walking helps a lot. Exercises are miserable with a catheter.

Ask about medication to relax the bladder or see a urologist.

Stay strong. Peace and healing!

Many thanks for this info and reply
