Change in bowel habits - allergy?

hello! I am a 23 year old female that has had IBS for about 6 years had colonoscopy this year and all was fine - usual IBS symptoms were frequent bowel movents cramps etc. For the last couple of months ive noticed a change in my stools. They are much looser than usual and mucus can be seen when wiping along with undigested food. I also get foul smelling gas with these symptoms which isnt usually like me. I usually have quite solid stools even with frequent bowel movements. I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this in the past and if so was it a food allergy or something else? Doctor has asked me to make a food diary and go back after a few weeks. Its really getting me down :(

Your are describing typical IBS symptoms which can change over time in response to diet or stress.Try to stay as calm as possible and try a food diary to see if you are intolerant to a particular food especially since you are experiencing undigested food in your stools. Everyone worries when their IBS symptoms change, but this is common with IBS. I have IBS C but I have also experienced IBS A when stressed. Try distraction techniques such as hobby to take your mind off your stomach and try light exercise like walking or swimming. Try taking an antispasmodic to ease your cramps before stress or anxiety begins. This is the most effective way of taking this medication. Do not worry!

Hi Pippa,

Thank you for your kind words. i shall keep this in mind. Youre right, bowel habits can change due to stressed etc. i am keeping a food diary so hopefully this can shed some light on the situation

To be honest, when you have IBS, you have to find your own strategies for managing your symptoms because once you’re diagnosed, doctors can’t really help if all your tests are normal. They tend just to give you a leaflet about your condition, don’t explain anything to you unless you ask, and leave you to cope. One of my doctors prescribed me Mebeverine which very few can tolerate and is a known stomach irritant. I had to find out for myself what antispasmodic worked for me based on what my brother took for his IBS. I was too afraid to go back to my doctor and risk being given another unsuitable medication.
