Hello lovelies!
i have changed my picture as I decided I did not like the last one.
This is me on my 50th Birthday Skiing in Tignes. 18 months ago.
I also managed skiing last Xmas. Only six months ago!
I am not offered Physio for my recovery,I am thinking of getting some Sports Physio after 6 weeks.
Do you think it is too ambitious to think I could manage some "old lady" Skiing in 6 months. Really don't want to jeopardise my lovely new hip but hate to think my Skiing days might be over.
So far I am being very cautious as my new hip is uncemented and I want it to "bed" in well, so just doing recommended exercises, and lots of rest.
More rest than I probably need as I keep falling asleep!
it will be two weeks tomorrow since I had the LTHR. I think the worst is over and I am starting to feel really very hopefull for the future, I am sure me and my new hip will have great times together!
Take care all.
Love Kris. X
I love your new picture, Kris. I had to look up where Tignes is -- what a place to ski!!! What a place to celebrate your 50th! I think sports Physio is a great idea. Let them know what your goal is and I think they would know how to get you there. All the things I've read mention skiing as one of the things that you can do. I was surprised because it seems like falling is such a part of skiing but you're probably (for sure) a much better skiier than I ever one. I feel like you but about pickleball. I went through a bit of a depression when I thought my pickleball days were over. It was a huge part of my life -- the exercise and the social part. I think now that I will get back to it but I'll take it slowly and I'll get as strong as I can.
My joint is uncemented too. I don't really know the pros and cons of that or how it is different in the long run.
We are about the same time wise. My left hip was replaced June 17. You must have been a few days after that.
I bet you and your new hip will have all sorts of new adventures together.
Hugs,
Leslie
Hi Leslie, I had to look up Pickleball on the Internet!
my hip is three days younger than yours. I had it done on the 20th.
I am sure you could get back to Pickleball, I suppose it is the twisting to be careful of?
you are right. Skiing itself is actually OK. It is the risk of falling or more likely in my case being crashed into by a reckless Snowboarder!
first things first. We need to get good and strong again.
I was soooo devastated when I found out I had OA and then to find it progressing so rapidly. So I am very grateful for this Opp and the opportunity to get back to a normal life. If Skiing is too risky then I would rather not do it if it meant risking my new hip. Bit of a balance isn't it?
mind you nothing to say I can't do Apres Ski!!!!
How are you doing? I have just started walking with one stick - so now I can carry things. It is the smallest things isn't it? Get my dressing checked/ removed or changed tomorrow. I have dissolvable stitches and glue. So no staples to remove, thank goodness!
keep me posted. ....

Fun that you looked up pickleball on the Internet, Kris. It is a fun sport. I think it is that twisting and quick stops that makes it hard on the joints. I spent time at a resort in Arizona the last couple years and so many people (most 65+) have either hip or knee replacements and they are back playing. I think I'll be able to do it. Just have to be patient and wait til my body is ready. I can understand the feeling of being devastated. It really is a blow, especially when you're used to being active. You're right that it is a balance......we don't want to risk damaging our new hip but we want to live life as fully and happily as possible. During one visit to my doctor when my hip was really hurting, I just sobbed. But I did get out that I was sure she dealt with way worse diagnoses during her day than OA of the hip! My older sister died of pancreatic cancer 5 years ago. There are all sorts of horrible diseases lurking out there. But the OA really had an impact on me.
LOL. About the Apres ski! But of course!
I am still walking with a two-wheeled walker. I promised the 'navigator" (sort of a liaison between me and surgeon) that I would use it until I saw the surgeon. So I certainly feel much stronger and that I could use a cane/crutches, but I'll stick with the walker for now.
You're lucky to have the dissolving stitches. Wish I did! I've been told to take a pain med 30 minutes before I have the stitches removed!
Hugs,
Leslie
Hugs back!
Good luck with the stitches thing. Eeeeek! Sure it will be fine, probably more the thought of it rather than anything! I am actually a bit scared of having my dressing off. What a chicken. My Mum who was a Casualty Sister said it is about time to get the dressing off. And should be OK. Just hope I don't unravel!
Good plan to keep going with the walker. This is the time to do as we are told. !
Take care.

Great exchanges back and forth between you Kris and Leslie - lots of fun to read.
You both sound as if you are doing very well - impressive. I am glad you can both envision returning to to your favourite activities. I am very glad to be able to walk again - something I enjoy tremendously and combine with other pleasures (travel, photography and and painting).
I would also like to try Tai Chi and more forms of yoga.
Love to hear that your recoveries are going well. I hope you continue along this path.
Cheers,
L
Hi Kris
I am similar to you. I love my skiing and I try to get over to the Alps once a year but I had my op in February so no skiing this season but hopefully next year. I asked my surgeon about this and his first reaction was its not recommended, but then he did concede that he is not a skiier and he knows that his colleagues in France and Switzerland say its absolutely OK as long as you are careful. Of course there is always the risk of a serious accident but they are there even without a new hip so I think you just need to live your life. The first few months are key to firstly heal then build strength but I am sure you will get there.
I plan to start on easy blues and take it carefully. Mine is cemented but I think the long term outcomes are the same. I put a link on the home page to a systematic review on cemented vs non-cemented THRs which is quite informative.
Good luck for your recovery.

Alison
it is fun this Forum thing. I am getting so into it. Even got myself a badge today!
How will I ever go back to work ?!!!!
Thank you Alison. That is really encouraging. I agree, can't completely avoid accidents. But would be VERY careful!
idealy I would have a no ski zone of about 50 metres around me.

Hi
Yes keep out of the snow parks! :-)

Thanks, Linda. I was enjoying those exchanges too. I did some Tai Chi before my surgery. It is great for balance. And there is a nice giving/caring vibe about Tai Chi. Lots of caring people. I think I will get back to it.
Hugs,
Leslie
So true, Kris! I just saw that you are an OT and first job was with hip patients. How cool is that? You didn't have to learn all that info like we did. I was a speech/language pathologist and often worked closely with OT's -- in the schools. When do you have to go back to work?
Hi Leslie,
I wasn't looking forward to have the staples removed either (twice) but I am sure that afterwards you'll think : Is this all it is ???? little pricks when staple is too tight, but a skilled nurse will do them so fast you hardly notice -
I did ask to keep the dressing on though - just for a couple of days to make me feel better and protect this lovely scar -
good luck ,
you both are doing great
big warm hug

Very different sort of OT! I have a term time contract, so always have the summer off. I am expected back the first week in September. So hopefully should be good by then.
I work in the Community. Doing adaptions for the disabled and moving and handling equipment. Hoists/slings. Lots of risk assessments!
Haven't even thought about work the last two weeks!
One of my work colleagues has just threatened to visit and check my hip precautions!

So right Renee,
big warm hug right back. X
