Chipped ankle, burning sensation

I recently rolled my ankle resulting in a chip in my ankle, I am now 4 days post injury and in incredible pain also am feeling a burning sensation in my ankle also when my foot is throbbing I feel the pain all the way into my hip its making sleep nearly impossible the over the counter medication isn't working I've been doing the RICE method but nothing seems to be helping. I am also not feeling great been nauseous and dizzy. The swelling is coming down but the bruising is still spreading. Any advice? Is what I am feeling normal?

Sounds like An avulsion fracture is an injury to the bone in a location where a tendon or ligament attaches to the bone. When an avulsion fracture occurs, the tendon or ligament pulls off a piece of the bone. Avulsion fractures can occur anywhere in the body, but they are more common in a few specific locations.

Avulsion fractures are more common in children than adults. In adults, the ligaments and tendons tend to be injured first, whereas in children the bone may fail before the ligament or tendon is injured.

you need an X-ray and a back slab until the swelling goes down.. RICE is correct.. Anti in flammatory tabs plus like ibrufen .. Get to A&E to get further advice..don't walk on it..

I have been to the ER and had an xray done and currently in an air cast boot I am scheduled to go back on Friday to see the dr but wanted to see if I should go back sooner

Is the pain worse since the ER visit? What did they think re injury type? They won't put you in a BK non weight bearing  cast yet the swelling has to go down.. Did they not advise you re pain relief? You should have crutches. Codiene for pain or Tramadol...best of luck for Friday..

You say a "chip" has resulted. I interpret this as a broken bone fragment. This would explain the bruising (which is bleeding).

It is likely that a number of structures (apart from the bone) were injured.

Whilst the pain and throbbing is to be expected, a sound orthopaedic opinion would be prudent.

Hi Ashley,

My symptoms were very similar to yours, though mine felt much better once I had a full cast on, sleep was almost impossible for the first month or so (I also broke my 5th metatarsal which had to have a screw in after two weeks) as you're in an air cast are you leaving it on all the time (except for bathing)? You may also not be blowing it up enough. I suggest you phone your Dr for advice and see you GP for stronger meds.
