Chronic kidney disease

I have stage 3 CKD. my gfr is 45 some times 53 can anybody tell me about this and this disease? Also can I improve gfr? How long before stage 5. I'm scared. Thanks for any info.

You need to go to the kidney forum as this one is for people with polymyalgia which is treated as a kind of arthritis.

All the best.

Hi Phyllis, first thing stop panicking.First you did not mention your age.As you get older kidney function falls off and lots of older people have CKD3.Also not everyone progresses to kidney failure and dialysis

Often kidney problems can be due to medication .Mine is due to NSAID for arthritis.I have been told can never take them again but my gift has recovered to 54.Your GP should do kidney function blood tests at least once a year or if you start a new medication.CKD3 is usually managed in community.Stage 4&5by hospital.

Are you in the right place? This forum is for PMR not kidney disease.

These are links to leaflets with explanations about CKD on this site:

I'm not sure if they are the same leaflet but that doesn't matter.

As Gillian says - stop panicking. At present all you probably need to do is have your kidney function monitored by your GP - although, as Gillian says, age has a lot to do with it. You don't say if you have another cause - and if you do, then the specialist is the person to ask.

Is it really your eGFR that you mean? That is a calculation automatically done on the basis of other blood tests when they are done to give a screening-type indication of patients who need a closer eye kept on them. It can be affected by several things including what you had been eating in the day or so before the blood was taken. If they are concerned they will do a "proper" gfr with a blood test and a 24 hour urine collection - and that gives a more accurate figure.

How long before Stage 5? How long is a piece of string? It most likely won't ever happen - and monitoring by your doctor will show if your kidney function remains stable or starts to get worse.

Sorry I didn't realize what forum I was on thanks anyway. X

No problem - hope I helped a bit.

Wish my eFGR was that high! I've been managing on 32-38 for about 35yrs! I guess one day it will drop enough to need dialysis...which is around 12!!!

It's all relative isn't it?
