Hello,
For the past year, I've had a chronic condition in which the area outside my knee, mostly below the patella (the little gap area), gets sore and painful whenever I ride a bicycle. It also hurts when I run, and especially when I get down on one knee. Kneeling can instantly trigger the pain, which is sort of a shooting / throbbing type pain. I'm afraid it has something to do with my meniscus. Doesn't sound like an IT band issue from what I've read.
I'm an otherwise healthy 25 year old male, not overweight, 5'9". Any thoughts?
Wow, I have the exact same symptoms you describe. Getting down on my knees is killer on left knee. Also getting into a car or out of a chair. Whats odd is my knee doesn't hurt when walking. It does hurt when starting off bicycling then pain let up. Does you knee hurt if you straighten your leg all the way? Will be seeing a specialist on Monday. Will let you know what he prognosis is.
Oh that's interesting. Yeah, it gets a bit stiff when I straighten my leg out for a prolonged period of time. Let me know what he or she says; I'm wondering if it's either a meniscus issue or IT band-related after all
I too have been thinking both possibilities. We shall see
Sounds as if you need to see an orthopaedic consultant. They are really the only ones who can help you I think.

Hi, just returned from consultant , MRI imaging shows meniscus tear on medial side. Also arthritis. Gave me a cortisone injection. Wants to try lubricating injections and then surgery if all that fails. My old grandpappy used to say "getting old ain't for cowards"
Yikes! Thanks for the update. I'll have to see a specialist about this, hoping I'm not in the smae boat
Hi,I think the pain I had on the lateral side of my knee was related to jamming it in a awkward way a month or so ago. That pain has resolved in the past few days. Don't ask me why. Best bet for you is to get a MRI. Only real way to see what's going on with your knee. Good luck. Let me know what they tell you. Meanwhile I'm hoping cortisone shot lasts for awhile!
