Chronic Pressure & Tightness in the Chest

Hi all,

I am an 80-year-old male with chronic pressure and tightness in the chest and associated back pain.

My health problems began 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with stable angina, which required triple coronary artery bypass surgery. The operation, I was told, was successful, however, it resulted in the moderate elevation of my left hemidiaphragm. It was later decided that the left hemidiaphragm was paralyzed, possibly due to a damaged phrenic nerve (aka postoperative phrenic nerve paralysis).

The pressure in my chest and also the back pain, which I think is related, started about 8 months ago. It is a constant tight sensation all around the chest area and is very uncomfortable. The back pain is a bit more severe.

The strange thing is, when I do gentle exercise, the problem is slightly relieved, but when I stand or sit still for long periods, the problem gets worse. I also get very short of breath and exhausted when I walk even a short distance.

It has been suggested that the problem may be exacerbated by anxiety and/or related to the spine.

I've recently seen both a cardiologist and lung specialist, and they have ruled out heart or lung problems. I should also mention that I recently underwent radiotherapy for lung cancer, and while it didn't remove the tumor completely, it has been slightly reduced.

I am currently taking Atorvastatin 20mg, Aspirin 75mg, Fluticasone/ Vilanterol, and Atrovent (ipratropium).

Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Alan
