I was diagnosed with chronic prostatitis around 2 years ago and it has been managed well. just before Christmas it flared up again. i was treated with trimetropine and then ciproflaxin which seemed to work but not fully been on antibiotics 3 months and they have been stopped. been put on Alfuzosin with limited effect. so the choice now is a scope to drain the prostate and send for a sample. after that the consultant said thats all he can do and ill have to live with it. Its 35g in weight but im seeking a second opinion. any help of advice would be welcome. thank you

Hi Barry. Read my other post please. U will know everything you need to know before going for second opinion. I can only tell you that anybody who is prescribing you random antibiotics without testing your semen/ prostate fluid for bacteria is crazy and you should stay away from them. Trimetropine is rubbish as it’s only kills E.coli. It’s not eradicating other bacterias. It’s cheap option so NHS is saving money because all they do is : cheap option first policy . Ciprofloxacin is also first generation drug. Cheaper then most antibiotics of this kind. I’m very surprised that you lasted 3 months on it. It has many bad side effects. Saying that 3 months should clear any infection but it is not guaranteed. Some bacteria is able to build biofilm. The antibiotic will not work

Do the urine culture, select antibiotics plus solodosin. Your symptoms will go away.

Mate I allow myself to disagree. Urine have nothing to do with prostate! I understand that everyone has a right to express his opinion but please do not give the wrong advice. It is dangerous

I have had raging uti s and most of the time my urine culture comes back negative! Not a reliable test.

Ted your urine culture test is coming back negative because:

  1. You are infected with bacteria but not in your blader. Bacteria could be in your testicle or prostate or God forbid in your kidney. Now and again bacteria multiples and moves to your blader perhaps during ejaculation.
  2. your test results never been negative. You been mislead by your Doctor. General NHS policy is forcing doctors to report "negative " test despite test results coming back as "no significant growth ". No significant growth doesn’t mean no growth. It is not normal to have small growth of bacteria in your urinary track. Especially when you have symptoms.
  3. Urine analysis test is completely useless in terms of detecting UTI but is cheaper then Urine Culture test and most doctors only do the first one

I totally agree with you. That was my point. That the urine test is useless. I asked my Uro about a semen test and he said that they don’t do that, and the urine test is adequate. I don’t know how I will find someone that does a semen test.

hi Ted. I could understand that perhaps GP could refuse you a semen culture test (GPs are clueless) but Urologist Consultant too? Mate change your Urologist. Seriously.
