Citalooram & Amitriptyline

I stopped taking Citalopram around 2months ago and my GO started me on Amitriptyline for migraines and as a sleeping aid. At the time, she said I wouldn't be able to mix the two tablets together as the clash quite bad. I've since seen other doctors who put me back on to Citalopram and never mentioned the clash between the two tablets.

I'm aware that Amitriptyline is also an anti-depressant and currently in the mood I'm in, rather than overdosing, I thought maybe taking both that and the Citalopram together might boost my mood higher than what it is. But now I've read somethings that they don't mix well together and you shouldn't do it.

Will it be ok considering the doses are 10mg Amitriptyline and 40mg Citalopram? As much as I'm struggling with suicidal thoughts, I am trying my hardest not to act on them so now I'm worried I've done something silly by taking the two together.

Hi Jodie,

I've been on citalopram 20mg since last August and had amitriptyline added in November. Amitriptyline was added due to my insomnia and long term back pain. I can't say I've had any particular problems with taking both although amitriptyline is only a small dose.

Hope this helps x

Hi Jodie, I have been taking citaopram and amitriptaleen about 8 years and it has not affected me in a ne ngative way. I was never told by the doctor that I shouldn't be taking them together. I was prescribed amitriptaleen for nerve pain ,as I had a horrific car accident., and citalopram for anxiety. In total I was on 75mg of amitriptaleen and 40mg of Citalopram with no adverse effects. After many months of anxiety, so bad I was housebound ,I went back to the doctor and he told me that I had a good run with the citalopram as it only works for 4/5years ,so he put me on another antidepressant called sertaleen ,and I have feelings of back normality again which I haven't had for a long time. The down side is that it takes quite a few weeks before you feel any better. I would try amitriptaleen with the citalopram and if it works for you ,I can't see why a doctor would object. Hope this helps you and all the very best for the future xx
