Citalopram drops

I was given these to help with tapering off cita. What I wasnt told was that I had to dilute the drops and found out the hard way. I also wasnt told that unlike the tablets after taking it, the affects are very quick, and found this out the hard way too. When I take it within ten minutes I get a head rush and nausea which slowly wears off to a permanent headache. And the final thing I wasnt told was you need less mg in drops than the tablets.

Wanted to let people on here know this incase you change to drops.

1 drop is 2mg, I've been using the drops for quite a while xx

Yes, i know! According to the patient leaflet, if you have taken Citalopram Tablets before the drops you will not require exactly the same dose when you are taking the liquid form. For example tablets 10mg = 8mg (4 drops)

When I picked up my prescription I queried on how to take this and asked them for clarification on how to take them and they agreed put the drops on a teaspoon and take it. My experience of doing that was really unpleasant felt like my mouth and insides were on fire. The correct way to take them is to stir in a glass of water. If I can get caught out with the umpteen questions I fire at the medical community other people can get caught out too

Wow.. speechless

I think the drops have changed now to 2mg xx

Yes mine are 2mg

Hi Paula

That's really shocking. It seems we have to check and double check everything ourselves when we shouldn't have to. I just realized that I have been sent the wrong contact lens prescription and I've been wearing them for two weeks. It was only by chance I looked at the package when I noticed. Because I have decreased citalopram some weeks ago and increased citalopram to 10 mgs for the last 10 days I thought my eyes feeling weird for that reason. Now I have a lovely migraine, on day two of it so I know I have another two to go before it goes. With the giddiness of withdrawal/increase as well it's not a great feeling. Hope your headache passes soon.

Take care

Yep! So because of the dose differences I went from 20mg tablets to equivalent of about 25mg and now am back on equivalent of 20mg, am sure I have had other changes, which now explains my severe reactions. How I am still sane is beyond me.

Thanks Lina, I can cope with headaches, but I cant deal with migraines, so my heart goes out to you. Drink lots of water and try an ice pack on your head. Its good to hear your eyes havent been affected by cita, must have been scary.

Thanks Paula. I hope you your weaning goes to plan, Lord knows you've been through enough.

Take care

I would ring your gp to double check as I've been on the liquid quite a while and was ok for many many weeks xx

Just realised they sent you the wrong prescription, thats outrageous!

I have been through enough, my anger, determination and sense of humour gets me through this. There I am tapering away unbeknown to me I have increased my dose, I have to laugh otherwise I will go mad ha!

Wow Paula that is so disturbing ..that's why I research everything plus I question everything..

There is more to this. I go back to my pharmacist, who know me well, due to my history. I said to him I am not happy with you and told him what happened and what I found out. His response, I knew about the burning but didnt know about diluting it. I told him to read the patient leaflet and to please make sure people are aware. He said so what dose are you on now, my reply back down to 20mg, oh he said. (Here i am just shaking my head) whilst I asked him to pick up another prescription for my side effects at the docs.

Thanks for listening to my rant, it really helps me to speak to people who get all this.

Did he actually confirm the drops were 2.5mg? Xx

Toria, check your patient leaflet its as clear as day on there. I have also checked online. When you change from tablets to drops you will not require exactly the same dose.

Always here ...

Its difficult lois, I dont know how i am coming across on this forum, as just trying to hang on here and keep strong, I dont feel like me at the moment

Hi Paula,

I’m sorry you had to go through this!

I’ve lost faith in some doctors and pharmacists. It’s like that in every profession so I’m like Lois . I ask questions and I’m very anal with all my details. It comes from my profession. Lol. Thanks for opening my eyes to all of this. Keep us posted how you are progressing. My prayers are with you🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. You’ve helped me a lot in the past.
