Citalopram for anxiety?

Hi everyone, I have been taking 20mg citalopram for nearly six weeks now for anxiety and i cant feel any difference at all. Does anyone else suffer anxiety and is this the answer?

Hi Jamie,

Yes it really does work !

I have suffered from from nerves and feelings of anxiety and depression since my teens ( I have just turned 40) and in September 2007 I said \"enough is enough\"

Doctor put me on 20mg and it has cured me ! No kidding !

Life has never felt so good - I feel really happy every day and although I still have worries and normal life experiences the difference is that I can cope.

For me it has been a miracle drug and my concern now is if the doctor tells me to stop taking them as I really couldn't go back to my old life of severe anxiety and panic -

Please stick with it I am sure you will get the same result. Good luck

Hi Selina

I had the same fear of coming off the medication to soon and spoke to my doctor. She was more than happy to reassure me and agreed to keep on them long term. This mean years rather than months.

This helped me to relax and things improved faster.

I find this site has helped me.

Reading the thoughts and views of other with the same medical condition and to realize I'm not on my own and that I'm not mad.

Take care

Julie

Hello Mrs J

It's good to hear that I could stay on the \"happy pills\" for a while -

My doctor has been very sympathic and has arranged I have Cognative

Behavioural Therapy for the next few months. Plan is to \" retrain\" my brain to think positively and deal with anxiety/panic in a way that means I do not need medication.

Only problem now is that Citalopram has worked so well I don't have any negative thought patterns for the CBT therapist to work on !

Anyway I'm giving it a go - I do think that I may ask to drop down to 10mg ( instead of the 20mg) and see if I feel any different.

Good to hear you have found support on this site - I only discovered it yesterday.

Selina

this is really encouraging to hear as I have just started taking these and my anxiety is off the scale right now and driving me mad so to know that it does work is something to look forward to. But I guess it really depends on the individual. I will still hope and pray it does something good for me though.

Another Newbie, At present I,m coming off mirtazapine that I have been taking for 6wks for anxiety and social phobia and has done nothing for me, also tried prozac and venlafaxine but side effects where to bad to continue with. So in 10 days time I will start citalopram, and to be quite honest reading some of the posts on hear I,m looking forward to it,there seems to be lots of positives especially for anxiety, unlike the site for mirtazapine where its all doom and gloom and no ones happy with the medication. I am also on a waiting list for cognitive behaviour therapy.

I,m sure I will have some side effects from citalopram but my doctor assured me that nausea is about as bad as it gets and to stick with it, so here hoping and fingers crossed, I also take a beta-blocker and have diazapine if things get really bad.

Take Care Everyone

Danielle.

Hi Jamie, I have been prescrible citalopram for anxiety which is so out of control. I have been coming off Diazapam for the last 3 years and hit an all time low in November. I have only been taking citalopram for 12 days, yesterday I felt a little better but today I feel so shaking and negative. The last week as been so dreadful, I have lost my appetite and the nausea is dreadful, the anxiety was also worse but was assured by my doctor just what to expect. Fingers crossed we both feel the benefit soon. smile
