Coeliac?

Hi

I am hopng someone can help me. I am a 29 yr old female and was diagnosed Hashimoto's this year. At my initial consultation with my endocrinologist she said she would do a Coeliac screen test to see if I have Coeliac disease, going by my symptoms.

The symptoms I experience when eating dairy and gluten/wheat are:

* Constipation

* Bloating

* Gas

* Headaches

* Sudden fatigue

* Cramps in joints and stomach

* Weight loss

* Dry, itchy, red, scaly skin appearing on fingers

I have just spoken to my endocrinologist's secretary, she has said the reasons I have not heard back about a referral to a gastroenterologist are the following:

* That consultants do not refer on a consultant by consultant basis.

* That at the bottom of the letter I was CC'd in, it states that the endocrinologist was expecting my general practitioner to refer me for an endoscopy:

"D/W gastroenterology - if coeliac screen is negative and symptoms suggest intolerance then no need for endoscopy, continue with reduced gluten diet."

So, I don't understand. Is nothing being done about my symptoms? I thought endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing gluten intolerance/coeliac disease?

Thanks

Just to clarify, the coeliac screen done in January was negative.

I am in the process of being tested for coeliac disease but this has been done with a blood test. An endoscopy wouldnt show if you have these things unless there was any damage to the stomach. I have most of your symptoms apart from the skin condition and was told I had non ulcer dyspepsia. I have seen natural practitioners and have been told that I have leaky gut from taking too many painkillers and antibiotics. Not heard of Hashimoto

Hashimoto disease is primarily an auto immune system attacking your thyroid gland which in turn causes an imbalance of hormones mainly in females but can also effect men too but to a lesser extent. It generally causes havoc to the quality of life of the individual. My advice to you is to knock on your GP’s door until he accepts you require referral to a specialist consultant  ASAP.

Thanks for your reply. smile I had it suggested that I had leaky gut but mainstream doctors don't seem to have heard of it.

Hi, thanks for your reply. With my Hashimoto's the antibodies are no longer in range. They are high but not high enough to be positive if that makes sense.

I see the GP Tuesday so I will be discussing with him then.

Leaky gut can also suggest you may need additional probiotics as gut flora maybe under preforming or is it possible you may require a trip to the gym/pool to tighten up your lower abdominal muscles to prevent leakage.

Hope all goes well for you.

No, I have come across the same thing. My Dr just looks blankly at me as if I'm mad. Did your problems start after anything you did/took i,e, medications?

No I definitely dont leak in that way, although I have had two children!

I have just started making fermented/cultured vegetables that are full of probiotics as I havent had any luck with the tablets.

Thanks for your help.

No, my problems have always been there for as long as I can remember.

They got worse when I would do the following:

* be constipated or have a rumbling tummy after I drink anything containing milk before 10am and within 20 minutes of eating it

* be constipated after I eat anything containing wheat or dairy before 10a and within 20-40 minutes

* experience weight loss, gas or fatigue after consuming wheat or dairy at any time.

My digestive system is a bit fickle I think. wink

Hi Jay65953

You mention constipation; and imply there may be a correlation between dairy and wheat products. My suggestion would be to talk with your GP and ask him/her  if it is possible you may have an intolerance  to dairy and or wheat products.

Regards

Hi, I will do this at my next appointment which is on Tuesday to discuss blood test results for ferritin, zinc, magnesium and other things. Thanks for your reply.
