Coming of citalopram... Advice needed!

Hi all, I was diagnosed with depression and anixety. I was given citalopram 20mg I went through ■■■■ the first 2-3 weeks and I finally went to my doctor and told him my side effects as they were unabareable at the start.

In my 4th week he said to come of them as I still had some side effects that were bareable compared to the start. So he said come of them start taking 10mg instead of 20mg for a week then next week take 10mg every other day for a week and start this "proponolol"

So I did I drop my dose to 10mg and for 4/5 days I felt amazing I mean this was the first Time in 6-7 years were I was actually excited to get out of bed in the mornings and go out and smile. I was social I was excited to see people my friends, my girlfriend. The smallest things that I just never done, simple things like just talking to my girlfriend or even watching a movie with her was so just good. I was happy! I felt the way I felt when I was 15 with no cares in the world just loving life..

I am currently starting 10mg every other day for a week and stopping and I am feeling down and feeling like sh*t, getting annoyed easily snapping at people not wanting to leave my bed not wanting to spend anytime with anyone! I am woundering if citalopram started working when I started to come of them?

I would bare the side effects if I could just be happy again like I was for 4/5 days back to the normal funny guy constantly smiling and laughing. Has anyone experienced this? what should I do? I have a doctors appointment in 2 weeks but I might go see him before that but it is hard as the last week my sleeping pattern is messed up!

Hi ..why not stay on 10mg every day ..I found that dose just enough to take the edge off anxiety ,plus I had no side effects ..give it a go.

good luck

Pat

Hi Steeko, I started on 20mg Citalopram and like you the side effects were unbearable, i dropped to 10mg on GP's advice and i have been fine ever since. Has Pat says it takes the edge off. I don't think you have given it long enough to have effect as it can take a few weeks to stabilise in your body.

Elizabeth.

Have to agree with the others and not your doctor.  A different dose suits different people.  I was on 10mg and it suited my anxiety level perfectly.  20mg didnt agree with you but 10mg did.  Stick with it.  Go back to taking it daily and see how you feel in say two to three weeks.  If all is good, stay there! smile

I agree.  Why not stay on them if you started feeling good on 10mg.  That great feeling you had was how I felt when I gone through the side effects and out the other side.  I maintained that great feeling for years.

Everyone gets the awful side effects, but they only last a few weeks.

Hi

Did you decide to stay on the 10mg

I am in a similar situation. I was on 10 for 1st week and it was fine (apart from few side effects mostly nausa), though I wasn't particularly happy as larry I was doing ok by the end of the week. Then doc said to go up to 20mg to get full benefits for depression and although I am now 5 weeks on 20mg and feel slightly happier in the afternoons, my sleeping ia terrible and I am really anxious in the mornings till about 1 pm. I find I have to take diazapam and sleeping tablets and I am thinking about just cutting down to 10mg as on my 6th week now and the anxiety is really getting to me.
