Someone had mentioned to me that copd and coffee are not a good combo.
I do like my morning cup of java. How is it for you guys? Thanks.

Afternoon terri69807
I also love coffee I can't handle it in the mornings but driink it in the afternoon I can't go a day without a cup off coffee unless it's not a very nice taste as some can have a funny taste to them! I seam to be ok but i suppose if we drink to much of it it could interfer with our medicines though some people with copd might be ok with no problem, What coffee do you like? I like kenco when I can get afford it or red mountain otherwise I stick too the best in roast granules that has a nice flavour have you tried this one?I'm wandering though how much cups off coffee are we with copd allowed to drink this I would like to know I think if we knew how much is safe it would help so we don't go over the limit do you know I will try & find out & let you know will be back soon!....
Hi karen78573:
Thanks for your message. Mayble I will try drinking it later on in the day
and see how it goes. It's 8:50 am here in Canada. I live in a small town
on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The coffee I am currently
drinking is Tim Hortons 100% Arabica Medium Roast.
coffe and water are the only 2 drinks that i have and must say im addicted to coffee my copd specialist hasnt said anything to me about not drinking it and if she did then im sorry she has more hope than bob hope which means no chance
I agree, can't imagine giving up coffee.
evening terri69807
I found out online that we can drink up to 8 to 12 cups off caffein free coffee but I doubt we could drink that many cups of decaff it's nothing like the original also the suggestion is that we limit our intake of coffee & drink more water easier said than done too much water is just as dangerous as not enough water,I guess its a case of drinking in moderation as the same in anything, well hope this might help us all if i find out anything else about coffee & copd I'll let you know....
Thanks so much Karen for this info.
Evening jackie25605
Ha ha Lol! That's funny I know just what you mean I can't do with out coffee either once I get started in the afternoon' which is when I start it's too heavy on my gut's in the morning' & the only time I can go with out a cuppa is if it doesn't taste nice or fancy something else to drink instead have a good evening jackie25605 & everyone else
I loke coffee and buy expensive stuff cant enjoy the cheap ones. I dont mean blue mountain but Millicarnoor similar of I canr get it. first thing in the morning and 3 cips later Im ready for my day to start
I drink about 1 to 2 pints of water and quite often a glass or 2 odf rose wine
Had COPD for 15 years now and I dont think what you drink makes much difference to your condition. Just enjoy what you like as long as its not smoking
unfortunately. Enjoy the rest of your life
Thanks nutty65. Luckily any puffs that I have in a 24 hour period most
likely add up to not even one cigarette. As I said am in the process of
trying extremely hard to stop even that - ain't easy though, as most likely
some of you know.
I've never heard of this, not from the pulmonary specialist, various gp's, the rehab group or the practice nurse, in fact she's made me a cup of coffee a couple of times.
Please, who is the "someone" who told you this & where did h/she get the information from? I've just done some googling and can only find very vague references such as caffeine (doesn't say how much) "may" affect "certain COPD medications" (doesn't say which ones).
I've had a quick glance at the info for the two medications I take - Symbicort and Spiriva - and there's no mention of any adverse interaction with coffee.
I'm interested to know where this info came from
Hi jude65855 it was me I googled in well I typed in at thë top of thë page on my laptop how much coffee is recommended for people with copd & tapped on some info about coffee & copd & came across 10 things you meaning us all shouldn't eat & thats where I saw it çan't remember what thë site was called but if you type in ten foods to avoid living with copd it should come up because it mentioned fluid intake! If I remember rightly it is American thë site I clicked on to hope you find it thë effects on medicine & coffee might of been ghe same site or another! I have a repeat prescription for my thyroid medicine aswell as for thë copd & hypertension & thë message on it for my thyroid medicine was to avoid any food & caffeine 30 before taking thë medicine so therefore I'm guessing also that caffeine can have an effect atleast too much anyway sorry I çan't remember thë actual sites as I dont write them down përhaps I should from now on it would be more helpfull sorry about this!
I read somewhere recently that coffee helps when people are having an asthma attack so I took it from that it was beneficial to copd patients as it may open the airways
Thanks kayc123 will give it a try.
vening Kayc123
I have also read this some where aswell
Well it might help some people but all I know is I haven't noticed any difference myself but there must be some one some where that finds coffee helps them with their breathing for this ever to have been mentioned for us to find out I'm sure! Do you drink coffee & if you do do you find it helps!?
You are not supposed to snort the coffee
I think it does help actually when I think about it. Before I had my diagnosis I was often waking about 4 am feeling like I wasn't getting enough air and I would get up , make a coffee and do anxiety pacing and gradually feel better. Whether it was the pacing getting blood flowing or the coffee, or both lol I don't know.I have my inhalers now and this hasn't happened since. Wine does affect my breathing, however it is my sinuses it affects, sneeze as soon as i get the glass near me, swells up the lining in my nose I read on the pollen count site that alcohol contains histamine.....doesn't stop me drinking it though
Hi Kayc123:
Don't know why I said I would give it a try re the coffee drinking. I do
drink a small mug of coffee in the morning, rarely a second cup. On this
side of the pond the general concencus is that coffee and copd do not
go well together. In other words it is not a good thing to do when having breathing problems of any kind.
It's possible you felt better just being upright rather than lying down: before I was prescribed Symbicort as well as Spiriva I frequently woke up (also around that time of the morning) feeling breathless and would sleep the rest of the night in an armchair, without any coffee.
Hi Jude65855:
Think it's kayc123 talking about waking 4am and making a coffee, etc. -
not me. Personally coffee would be the last thing I would drink to try and
relieve the breathing issues and/or anxiety! To each their own, what works
for one person obviously doesn't for for someone else. Thanks ladies!
