My mother had her gallbladder out over 3 years ago. Everything was fine until about 4 months ago. She started having pains in the same place as her gallbladder used to be. She told her primary doctor about it who ordered x-rays and an ultrasound. The technicians who reviewed them said they would have said it was her gallbladder had she not told them it had been removed. Turns out there was a bile duct leak after 3 years! They tried putting a stent in that did not work. They then tried another stent along with a drainage. She then developed an infection called MSSA and became septic. She's been in the hospital now for 5 days with an IV of sodium chloride and oxacillin. She's now in a lot of pain. The doctor's say they don't know what to do because they have never had a patient who developed a leak 3 years later. They want to take the stent out, but first want to see if the leak has stopped by injecting something into her drain. They plan to transfer her if there is no improvement within a few days because they don't know what to do. Her liver levels fluctuate, but are mild. She still has a fever that fluctuates also. Does anyone have any advice? She also has a terrible headache that goes away temporarily with medication, but that wears off before she is allowed more medication. The did do an MRI that showed no absess on her brain.
I am sorry that your Mom is having so much pain. That is a lot to go through.
i wonder why they cannot just replace the clip that was placed in her bile duct?
i am sure the drain is there to catch what has spilled into the abdominal cavity, but that won't fix the origin of the problem. Headache could be a result of the meds she is on, but gallbladder related pain can cause headache too (im sure nerves are still there even if the gallbladder is not). advice would be to consult with a different surgeon quickly, if you can. I hope you and your mom get the help you need!
