Day 12 after TKR pain still not under control on cocodamol very sick on them. Also leg was so swollen could not get the stocking on for a couple of days not sure how long to keep the sock on for ? Im 67 male
Hello
those tablets made feel sick too. I couldn't eat anything for 3 days
also Iwas told to wear the stockings for 6 weeks
i'm just over my 3 weeks so halfway there.
good luck
Jean
You should keep the stockings on for 6 weeks until you have your check up. I found ibuprofen better for the swelling and ice.
Thanks will carry on with them then only 4 tummy injections to go
Thanks will change to ibuprofen to see if they are better
I don't go back to see my surgeon until my 8th week as he's on holiday does anyone know if I need to keep the stockings on until I've seen him??
No, six weeks is enough. Checked with my consultant.
Sorry to hear you're in so much pain. Can you ask your GO for stronger pain relief?
Since my motorbike accident I've been on MST morphine sulphate. When I have my knee replacement on 16th Oct I'm hoping to stay on these until the ligament repairs ops on other knee
Thank you
I didn't fancy wearing them for 8 weeks I'm just over half way there 3 weeks and 3 days and counting
Thank you
Jean
Aren't they dreadful? Had to wear mine during the long, hot Summer with only half an hour off for a shower.
Took them off six weeks to the minute!
I guess I'm a little luckier than you as it's now coming up to Autumn here
but I really hate wearing them..
I'm also having good and bad days with the pain one day it seems easier then the next day it's back with a vengeance.

They are important so we need to grin and bear them....they are gone before we know it...I had to use them with hip replacement too.
NOW, I've been taking Grape Seed Extract for 19 yrs and this antioxidant does address ALL edema issues....
WHen I went to surgery I had to go off any blood thinners for 5 days, and probably 2 days after replacement, I went back on my Grape Seed Ex....as they do keep blood thinned out.
These are ALL around powerful antoixidants that address so much in our bodies and mainly work on CIRCULATION.
You can do a google on Fluid Retention and Grape Seed Extract.
NOW, if one takes a pharma blood thinner then can't take both... I'm sure with TKR your surgeon has you on a blood thinner for I don't know how long and the compression hose....my surgeon here in the U.S. had me on aspirin therapy for 3 weeks after as I recall.....
So give this some thought as this powerful antioxidant does reduce edema issues.
I've been working with supplements for about 25 yrs for my health...I'm 76.
None of the consultants at my hospital use them at all. They stopped them last year. Just the stomach jabs for four weeks.
It's stockings for 6 weeks. Ask your GP for stronger meds . You need to get the pain bearable to do the exercises . Keep icing your knee . Wrap it right around the back too ..the pain us bad , but should start to improve soon
text book answer is 6 weeks. but to be honest, since i started working again after 3 weeks, i couldn't see myself coming in with the stockings as it would make sitting even more uncomfortable, so my specialist gave his nod of approval to leave them off. i am assuming you are taking blood thinning medication? or jabbing yourself?
by the way, the best thing if your leg swells up is a lymph massage. makes a HUGE difference. not painful in the least and gets all the fluids moving again. from one day to the next my swelling went down by 2 cm in circumference.
good luck and hang in there, it does get better!
I have used lymph massage, learned from my osteopath, since my dressing came off.At 3 weeks I only have a small amount of swelling around the knee and nowhere else.
Hi can you tell me what lymph massage is please
I was thinking the same! I googled it and wasn't much wiser so I have emailed a Physio I want to use after I hav my first TKR next year to ask them!
Hi Jean, basically it is using what is sometimes called chichen feet.Basically you use your thumbs very firmly on one side of the knee with your fingers splayed on the other side. Then massage the fluid down towards the underneath of the knee where the lymph glands are able to drain away the fluid. I hope I have explained it correctly, I only do what I was taught to reduce the swelling that I had before the tkr, I was very pleased that it works post op. I use E 45 to massage but you should check with your specialist first as everyone is different.
Thanks Carol
