Im 3 week LTHR posterior approach so just wondering anyone else been told to wear these surgical stockings for the 6 weeks, I've had shorts on today because of the hot weather and my wife says I look like Don Estelle from "it ain't half hot mum" my street cred has gone down hill fast. I am doing everything the consultant has told me to do but I'm walking 3 or 4 mile a day with crutches besides pottering in the house so surely not much chance of DVT, but having said that don't want any setbacks.
I think that it's a small price to pay for your health, only a few more weeks to go, your on the mend and like you said it's a better option than a blood clot
Thankfully my young consultant doesn’t believe in using them so I didn’t have them, only blood thinners for a month. Must be boiling in this weather. Commiserations to you
I was not given or told to wear any stockings just inject for a month but, I am surprised you are walking so far so soon it gives me something to hopefully aim for (well maybe not that far). I am 8 days post op and would not have thought walking that far was possible so soon. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.
I wore my compression stockings for 4 weeks. It hasn't been hot here so they were actually cozy. What I complained about was taking the blood thinner warfarin because I could not take ibuprofen to cut down on the swelling while I was on warfarin. I was so glad to go off of that after 4 weeks!
I imagine that since you're moving around so much that you, like me, are a very low risk of getting a blood clot. But the way I looked at it was better safe than sorry. One of my riding instructor colleagues had a knee replacement a couple months before my hip replacement and we all thought she'd sail through with zero complications because she is so healthy and athletic. But she did end up getting a blood clot and ended up having to come stay in the skilled nursing facility I work at part-time and she was miserable. So, every time I thought about just not taking my warfarin I thought of how I didn't want to end up in the skilled nursing facility for a blood clot myself if I could help it and decided to go the safe route.
It's only 3 more weeks. Your street cred will be decimated if you end up in a 24/hour skilled nursing facility for a blood clot. Maybe see if you can find some really funky compression socks online. I have three pairs with really weird patterns on them and they make me a little happier because of that.
The dreaded warfarin is now a thing of my past and soon your nasty compression socks will be too. But keep wearing them as long as the doctor said and then you can burn them in a ceremonial bonfire. After 6 weeks!
I'm nine days out from my second THR. Neither time has surgical stockings been recommended. I just take a baby aspirin twice a day for two weeks. I can't even get regular socks on let alone ones that fight back!
Yes, I had to wear them for 6 weeks. A real nuisance as I couldn’t put them on myself. I don’t think it will do any harm to take them off for a few hours a day while you are active but my physio says it isn’t worth the risk to leave them off too much.
As for the walking, the first day after discharge I was only walking 100mts but increased my distance every other day as instructed by my physio but everyone's different im sure after another week or so you will feel stronger, good look with your recovery.
I have just had a shocking thought, the physio said get up and walk around the house every hour. I have not been outside since I came home that cannot be good. I think I had better go out today. I had to walk with a stick anyway so it is no difference on the crutches is it?
I started off round the garden then ventured a little further each time then reducing to one crutch and then using nothing every ones different and go at different paces good luck
I think it has mainly been my foot swelling when I have been on it and getting a shoe on comfortably. I am not bruised, no pain so I can not blame that.
After a week I had quite a lot of swelling above my stocking and the hospital told me to just wear them at night. I did that for a month. I too was very mobile during the day. Maybe check with the hospital? I had a number to ring. Good luck.
Yes, I think that is sensible. When talking to people prior to surgery, it is surprising how many said they were using a only a stick within a week or two but, I would rather be safe than rush it.
