My dad had major surgery to remove his bladder due to cancer. He also had his kidney and prostate along with other bits and pieces removed. 2 months later he was back in hospital with PEs. He was put on medication. He has been back in hospital 3 times since related to issues with the surgery. The surgeons decided to take him off the blood thinners as he requires further surgery when he gets stronger. He has been out of hospital for 3 weeks now which is the longest since the beginning of the year.
The problem is he is very short of breath just sitting. Is this normal? Trying to get his specialists to make a decision is impossible. Come back in a month they say!
Hi Sharrie , your Dad has been through the mill - so hope things improve for him . Unfortanely PE's can be a result of post surgery and caused by prolonged bed rest and immobility. He's on thinner as a result of the PE so needs to recover sufficiently from the PE's before undergoing more surgey - , they will take him off thinners a day or so before to any new surgery to minimise the risk of internal bleeding.
They have actually taken him off the thinners already. They were ceased a few days before surgery to place a stent in his remaining ureter that was blocked. This was just over 3 weeks ago. Do you think the fact that he isnt on thinners could be the reason his breathing is worsening?
after a PE most suffer from breathlessness and fatigue to a greater or lesser exent - I recovered quickly from my PE but some others take many months to recover - but the fact that he is off thinners his breathlesness could also be a symptom of a new PE post his last surgery . Im not a medical professional , but If your are not getting any satisfaction from his doc , then a vist to A&E should determine if a new PE has ocurred and causing new symptoms- good luck.
