I have HSV1 that presents in the genital area.  I was diagnosed this summer and have since had two outbreaks.  I take Valtrex 1gm + L-Lysine daily as a suppressant.  

My question is this, if I am familiar with the nerve pain and general malaise associated with the onset of an outbreak and avoid intercourse during that time and certainly during an actual outbreak, do I still need to wear a condom at 'other' times i.e. when I'm perfectly healthy with zero indications of shedding / outbreak? 

From what I've read there is an extremely low possibility of passing the virus unless one is shedding or having an outbreak.  This would lead me to believe that I am OK having unprotected oral and vaginal sex, assuming my partner is OK with this following our discussions.

Please don't read this the wrong way, I'm not looking to get away with anything.   The last thing I want to do is pass this to anyone else.  That said, I'm looking for opinions from people living with the virus.

Hi mate be on the safe side use rubbers I was honest with my girlfriend who is now my wife of neer 12 years and we went down the road of unprotected sex when I was clear of any symptoms she got it within 3 months.wasnt a big issue as we both new the risks and honesty is a biggie .also  get some origano oil you will be amased at the results

I have read extensively about it and apparently it's difficult to acquire hsv1 genital to genital, especially because it sheds asymtomatically infrequently. It has never happened to me and i've been with my boyfriend for two years, that being said i also haven't had an outbreak since the initial one three years ago.
