Considering taking but read about 'permanent sexual dysfunction'?

I was prescribesd 20mg by my doctor today and was going to start taking tomorrow but am doing my research first and have just come accross this on Wikipedia on Citalopram: Sexual dysfunction is often a side effect with SSRIs. Specifically, common side effects include difficulty becoming aroused, lack of interest in sex, and anorgasmia (trouble achieving orgasm). Genital anesthesia, loss of or decreased response to sexual stimulion, and ejaculatory anhedonia are also possible. Although usually reversible, in some people these sexual side effects become permanent after the drug has been completely withdrawn. This is known as post-SSRI sexual dysfunction.

Whilst this is quite personal can anyone advise if this is 'common'?

Also would drinking alcohol on the odd occasioin be a huge issue?

It's a tough one, and something I'm very wary about myself. Before starting cit, my doctor told me that it would only lead to delayed ejaculation. When I first started taking it from May to September (before going cold turkey), I remember feeling a lack of urge to even masturbate, let alone have sex.

I went two weeks cold turkey, and remember getting a bit of my drive back. I've just restarted citalopram 5 days ago and I think my drive hasn't dipped just yet.

I know it's ironic that an antidepressant hits sex drive, but I believe that in the long run, reducing depression will positively impact sex drive. Having a calmer and more positive state of mind is definitely more conducive to sex than feeling anxious and low.

Saying that, I'm trying to convince my psychiatrist to put me on Wellbutrin because I've heard it positively impacts sex drive.

Over 20mg my libido was non existential was ,orgasm ..reducing to 10mg and all feeling came back ..it does vary..my husband has been on different anti depressants and has never experienced any sexual problems !!

I've been on 20 mg for 2 months now & no sexual problems. Also I'm not a big drinker but have had a couple drinks now & then & felt fine. I think it's like Pat said the side effects just vary from person to person. These meds have really helped me get back to normal every day life! Yay!
