A month ago I started getting heartburn after thanksgiving meals and I tried self medicating with Tums for a few days but it became constant. The heartburn pain then turned into constant burping and chest pain. The only relief I get is when I lie down flat I will stop burping or if I sit hunched over. I went to my Dr and said it was gastritis and put me on omeprazole. I tried it for a week then they switched me to Protonix and then recently nexium. Nothing has stopped the burping and weird stabbing chest pains. It occurs all times of day and seems unrelated to what I eat. Was told by my GI it's likely GERD but now the medicine has given me some bad side effects and being tested now for CDiff on top of it. I have a endoscopy scheduled in a couple weeks and a breath test.. I did get a barium swalow x ray last week which just found intermittent GERD and no hiatal hernia. Is this just reflux or could it be something else that can cause unrelenting burping and stabbing chest pains?
Burping and chest pain are GERD symptoms and your barium swallow showed GERD, I have GERD with a lot of heartburn, some problems with fatty and spicy foods and occasional chest pain with very little burping. To find out if you have anything else, wait to see what your endoscopy and breath test show. Your specialist will probably be looking for gastritis and h pylori which are related.
