Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi everyone! so just like all of you for a couple of months now, i have been feeling the same exact sensation in my throat and upper chest: mainly throat. A cold sensation as if i swallowed Vicks vaporub. Doesn't hurt so didnt relate it to a sore throat or even a cold. i have gone bizurk looking for an answers. I kept reading everyones stories and responses etc. So i went ahead and did my own trial and error. Here is what i concluded and I strongly feel I am right. 1. Since covid i developed bad anxiety. i was never an anxious person but with everything happening can you blame me? 2. My pcp prescribed Larozapam (probably spelled wrong.) 3. I have been eating alot of spicey and hot foods lately. Well because all i all I do at home is try new meals to cook.

The feeling started early on, maybe like May-ish. I badly wanted a buffalo chicken dip and I made it at home. I made it and ate left overs like 3-4 times/days in a row. (judgement free zone right? lol) The feeling started to happen but I did not relate it to the dip. At this time, i started my anxiety med. So alot going on at the same time! That feeling would come and go but always within hours. I couldn't handle it anymore. I couldnt even sleep. so went online to search for answers. Again, it didnt hurt just very annoying.

Eventually, the feeling went away for good! No rhyme or reason in my opinion. I also was no longer on anxiety meds. I had wheened myself off of them. However, lately (July)i have been getting anxious a bit because the covid surge is rising again in states and offourse here goes my anxiety. Anyhow, I also decided to do so the dip again cause it was soooo good! and BAM! That freakin feeling came back! I decided to take my nxiety med and also took some Pepcid for heartache. For days in a row i took the Pepcid. I have been feeling great! No more cold minty feeling. Whose to say if the feeling comes back but all said and dont - When you get anxiety one tends to hold their breath or forget to breath. That along with buffalo dip combination. a recipe for dissaster. I trully believe all that together is the culprit. The anxiety, unknowingly holding my breathe due to anxiety and super spicey foods. I stopped the dip and took Pepcid and am more relaxed now. No more cold sensations for me!!!

just read your about your cold sensation in your throat and chest. I've had this since April. I'm going crazy with it. interestingly you mentioned about anxiety meds and covid-19. I've seen a few different doctors and they've done many tests on me to rule out all kinds and everything has been thankfully negative. that being said my doctor had mentioned that this could all be related to some kind of anxiety as he's been seeing many patients during covid-19 with unusual symptoms appearing. i also was on anxiety meds for several years and got off of them in March when covid started. it's since then i started feeling unwell and having this crazy cool sensation that's annoying and uncomfortable. like a cool minty sensation in back of my throat and in my chest, my mouth and palate. i even feel it in my ears and i get lots of nausea too!!! I started taking my anxiety meds again a few days ago. I'm hoping this will give relief! how long have you been on your anxiety meds that you've started to feel relief???

Hi, you have very similar symptoms to me. i was poorly late March with very bad sore throat glands up etc and ive not really recovered. DR puts it down to Covid 19 and antibiotics have had no effect. Im tired all the time but the worst symptom is the constant icey feeling at the back of my throat and tongue. my ears ache constantly and the lymph nodes in my neck and really uncomfortable .

are you any better ?

Hi. Well, it was not a fungal infection. I was able to see the doctor in person. Culture was taken, it was negative. My doctor is treating my lingering sore throat, and inflamed bronchial tubes as "Residual Reactive Airway Disease" caused by an overactive immune system which was cause by Covid-19.
Concerning the cold, minty menthol feeling....she said "I have no idea what that's all about." To address the inflammation in my bronchial tubes, nasal passages I was prescribed a Pulmicort inhaler, steroids. To address the inflamed sore throat and my complaint of the cold minty menthol thing (which she's never heard of) I was prescribed Magic Mouthwash. This mouthwash did provide temporary relief from the discomfort of the menthol thing, because it has lidocaine in it, so it numbed my mouth for a while. It also has nystatin in it, just in case the culture missed the thrush or other fungal infection, along with benedryl to help in calming the immune system down. The mouthwash lasted 1 month, so it's long gone. There were no lasting effects from the mouthwash. Interesting and annoying, the cold minty menthol feeling has evolved. It is now burning -- my tongue, my upper gums, and the roof of my mouth. Also there is a very nasty chemical taste on the back of my tongue. All of the burning and the nasty taste are minimal (sometimes completely absent) when I wake up in the morning. Then within an hour the burning begins. Everything burns, or just a part and then it moves from place to place. That's when I started searching online again! I found that "Burning Mouth Syndrome"is a thing, studied by doctors and people are treated by doctors for it (but most say the treatments are not successful). Joined a group on facebook - The New Burning Mouth Support Group. Wow!! This entire mouth adventure is shared by many people. For many..it started with a Cold Minty Menthol feeling/taste and then evolved into burning. I couldn't believe it. It is wonderful. Doesn't make me feel any better, but it's full of good information and reading the comments of people that have the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS is comforting. So, reseach Burning Mouth Syndrome.
I end with my current guess - the disruption to our pain receptors and taste/smell receptors is due to nerve damage or aggravation. In my case, I know Covid-19 caused it somehow - was it nerve damage from my immune system being super charged? OR could stress be involved somehow? Good luck, feel better soon!

what you describe has been reported as symptoms of covid 19. especially the loss of sense of taste and smell.

I have a sinus infection now and have same icy cold feeling in my throat. It's driving me crazy!!! Did the steroid spray clear this up for you??? They started me on flonase, along with the antibiotics. I am not sleeping well due to the nagging feeling.

Oral sensory nerve damage can result in phantom taste or phantom pain sensations. While sick with Covid-19 I developed the minty menthol taste/sensation. That has changed, it evolved into a burning feeling. My tongue, roof of mouth, upper gums, inner upper and lower lips. For a few days I tasted a nasty chemical on the back of my tongue. Luckily that didn't last long, but it made me miss the more pleasant minty sensation. While reading the many covid-19 posts on some covid groups/discussions, I have seen quite a few people that had this cold/minty feeling develop while sick, just like me. Tomorrow I have an appointment with DR. Number 3, an ENT who is also the chief of the ENT department in the hospital in my area, one of the many NYC area hospitals. Dr. Number 2 has referred me to him specifically because he has been seeing many covid-19 recovering patients that have lingering weird symptoms, like weird oral tastes and sensations. If you look up "Burning Mouth Syndrome" you will find that many of the folks who suffer from this had it begin with the minty menthol thing. The cranial nerve Michael has mentioned can be damaged by many different things, from vitamin problems to viruses to your own immune system being in overdrive (which causes tons of problems!), to dental work. The type of damage and the severity of the damage can both vary also. This is a lot of new knowledge for me to take in, but I am learning. In the case of covid-19, Drs have even figured out where the virus entered the body and how it traveled to that cranial nerve. Amazing. Also of note is that drs trying to calm the overactive immune system tell you to take antacid, specifically Pepcid AC (brand name), or the generic version - famotidine because it also acts as a histamine suppressor, it's not just for acid reflux - who knew?! So famotidine, and also benedryl will help in the attempt to calm a hyperactive immune system, which will help cut down on inflammation which may be damaging that nerve! A prescription for clonapin or something similare is often given, anti anxiety and anti convulsive medications, they are super helpful in calming the immune system so it stops attacking the body, including that cranial nerve. I've learned a lot since my first post here a few months ago, and thinking maybe I had Thrush. I'll update again if I get any new additional info tomorrow from the ENT.

Hi all! I've been experiencing extremely similar problems to this. Every time i breathe in through my mouth, it's almost like my throat goes cold and minty? it's a very odd feeling. its also causing me to be quite breathless and currently having trouble sleeping due to it. I can also assure you its not about age! I'm currently 18 and experiencing this too!

I've been reading through these posts but don't believe that i actually have an acid reflux. My symptom seems to be a lot more milder than this but still also extremely uncomfortable! I have looked into this more on other websites and other people have been saying it could be nose drip? My nose was constantly running last week, so maybe that's the reason behind it! It's been happening for a week now and still doesn't seem to be budging.

I will be booking an appointment over the phone with a doctor tomorrow so hopefully i will get to the root of this problem soon!

Hi everyone, I am here with the same symptoms coming back once in 4 or 5 months and I found a way to get rid of it that actually works for me. I hope this works for others also. It actually the acid reflux. I get rid of it sometimes just by eating something cold like some ice cream or chocolates(Ice cream is the best option) also avoid having hot or warm food and drinks. The other way is eating on time and going to bed early at least for 3 to 4 days. The ice cream is like a hack that works for few weeks or sometimes that's more than enough to get rid of it. But staying awake late night is what causes this problem. So that's it guys, sleep properly on time and tight. 😊

I've learned a lot about my cold minty menthol mouth since it started in March. Mine started while i was very sick with Covid-19. I found this discussion here on patient.info and it became the beginning of me trying to self diagnose along with some doctor input. Since then it evolved into a burning tingling, quite unbearable at times, affecting my tongue, roof of mouth, upper gums, and the inner part of the upper and lower lips. I've discovered that there is a thing called Burning Mouth Syndrome. What's most important and noteworthy is that many of the sufferers state that it began with a minty menthol cold sensation!!
Possible causes of the condition vary greatly. Viruses, dental work, anesthesia for dental work, acid reflux, thrush or another fungal or bacterial infection, back bone/neck problems, nerve damage, pain/taste receptors in the mouth sending crazy messages to the brain, the brain detecting pain/taste messages that are not being sent resulting in phantom tastes or no taste or pain ( that one is like the people with covid-19 who temporarily lost their taste). The list of possible causes goes on and on.
There are Facebook groups: The new burning mouth syndrome group, burning mouth syndrome, a few others. Join one. The groups are full of people that either started with the minty menthol cold thing, or still have it. They share all types of feel better remedies, insight from doctors. Please, look into The Burning Mouth Syndrome. You'll find that you are not alone. We all know the effect - cold minty menthol. With help from the Burning Mouth Syndrome people you might find a clue to your specific cause.

Can't believe how we all describe it the exact same way
Just saw my dentist and said best way to describe this is like I've sucked on a eucalyptus cough drop.

Hello,

I have a cool sensation on my tongue and roof mouth too. This has been going on for months. I got tested for covid and it was negative. It feels as though someone took a topical coolant and swiped it over my tongue and roof of mouth. Food and drink tastes are not what I know them to be making me have no appetite. I do not enjoy my food or drink.

I have had GERD and have to watch what I eat before going to bed as I would get laryngo- spasms and they are quite frightening. Of course docs ( General Practioners' do not seem to understand much when it comes to the gastrointestinal areas.

I want so bad to rid this from my life. Everything tastes off and this cool sensation is driving me nuts. Perhaps I have had Covid and have antibodies from it. I am on lithium and Pristiq. Both could be a culprit but I have been on these for awhile and this never occurred before. I am now weaning myself off lithium and do not see any improvement. I can go off Pristiq but it make me sick in stomach to wean off that and I can't tolerate that nauseous feeling every day. But in order to do that I will have to wean off to find out. All I can say right now it is very weird and I want it to end. Eating these days is one of my few only enjoyment's.

Please text any time with any solutions. I have appoint this month for my yearly physical and will discuss.

I just started getting this. but it comes and goes in waves. more in the evening ,too. T its strongest, it makes my tongue and throat almost buzz, or tingle. but always a minty cold inhale and exhale for a few seconds then it goes away , leaving me a little out of sorts. I have an enlarged spleen. and currently undiagnosed heart issues. I take propranolol and I am a 39 tr old male. now, I have read all these responses and it blows my mind. i have eaten a good bit of fresh blueberries lately, and prebiotic yogurt, and drinks, much like the other ppl commenting on this thread. i also am on a proton pump inhibitor, with an endoscopy scheduled next Tuesday. my spleen has been enlarged for at least 4 months maybe longer. my doctor says due to epstein barr virus. I have constant chest pain and heart arrhythmia and we don't know why yet, but i take propranolol for that. theese temporary minty throated buzzy feeling waves are the latest developments in my health saga. everything started going haywire in February of this year. I think it should be mentioned that I also have rhabdomyolysis, and arthritis in my spine. any input would be appreciated greatly
