Since having the Norovirus 3 months ago I have had a very sensitive stomach and know what to do re bland diet etc as have had this many time before but if I devert at all, back comes the diarrhea. My question is could this affect the pred absorption? Or does the pred make this problem worse?
Also, I think I read on the forum not to take probiotics when on pred. So I stopped these. When in Spain, they always advocate probiotics for bad stomachs. I have changed organic natural yoghurt to dairy free yog before taking pred and I drink dairy free mllk. Ater bad day yesterday will eat boiled chicken, white rice, herbal tea and no dairy. And if no better will have to see GP for tests I suppose. Soooo annoying as feel ok on 15mg in other respects and can't say I feel ill at all. Does anyone else suffer this problem?
Here, in the US, my rheumy encouraged use of probiotics which I take with no problem so far.
I take a brand that was tested to have what it actually says on its container. I guess the fear is taking a brand that had contaminants or unapproved strains.
Many thanks. I used to take a good one but stopped when I read they are not advisable with Pred. But it was a while ago. Will make appt with Dr tomorrow.
No reason at all not to take probiotics with pred. My husband had a similar problem - post viral IBS was the specialist's opinion and he was given a high level probiotic to take as well as something to "bind" the gut contents (which gives it a rest so it can recover a bit).
But although I doubt it is c-diff (you won't have had antibiotics for that and that is the usual root cause) discussing furture management with your GP would be a good idea.
One other question: are you on omeprazole or another PPI? They are not good for guts either!
PS - as long as the pred is in your stomach for an hour or so it should have been absorbed. If it isn't being - then you would have a return of symptoms anyway.
i decided to try probiotics to see if they helped me feel a bit better. I went to a health food store and spent time with the clerk about which to buy. When I got home I read the small print on the label and it said do not take with steroids. So then I checked out Dr Goggle and the advice is to avoid probiotics if on prednisone because the probiotics enhance your immune system......and with PMR we take pred to suppress our immune system.
Ive read on this forum that many people take probiotics without any issues and I think it's one of those issues that you have to investigate and decide what works best for you.
I've not taken probiotic supplements, but I've been eating loads of fermented foods which are rich in helpful microbes so I don't think it can be harmful when on pred. I've been reducing slowly but successfully throughout this time. Some people swear by kefir in particular.
Thanks so much. I don't take any PPI as manage ok using natural yog before pred. Think this problem has been kicked off by the stomach infection I had which happened to me before.
Seems to me you don't need to worry about boosting your immune system. You still haven't recovered from an illness you had months ago. We don't want to eliminate our immune system, just stop it from harming ourselves. I think rebalancing your gut microbiome is a sensible idea.
I have eaten 3 bananas today to keep me going along with boiled chicken and small portion of rice! All other fruit and veg banned for now alas as normally eat loads (berries). Will have to cut down I think
Let's try again, no idea why that last reply went to be moderated. You still haven't recovered from an illness you had months ago. I think rebalancing your gut flora is a good idea.
