I’m a wheelchair user who will be facing a hip revision in the not too distant future. Dreading it but have heard about surgeons using a constrained socket to help reduce dislocation risk. Haven’t spoken to my revision surgeon yet (NHS patient so might be a long wait!) but just wondered if anyone on this forum knew anything about this. Is it possible to brace a hip? Trying to do muscle exercises in the chair but I’m going to need all the help I can get!
Hi Carol, did your initial replacement dislocate? I'm same as you, waiting for replacement but I'm on crutches, I'm told that so long as I follow guidelines I shouldn't have a problem but their are only 3 hips they get to choose from, if ours doesn't conform to the size then they should be looking at other options to make sure their not going to Pop out.
I have read recently how they are experimenting with 3 d printers to make them to fit.
We will be decrepit by then I think
PS yes there are hip braces but they don't like people to wear them as they don't allow the muscles to work properly and that makes muscles weaker
Hi, I’m sure we’ve spoken before. I’m the one with MS who’s had an unsuccessful half hip replacement which is already wearing and tearing my socket. I’ll never be able to walk much so strengthening muscles is a big issue. Thanks for info on replacements. I use this forum so I’m clued up when I see surgeon.
Hi Carol
iv had 5 THR 2 dislocations and 2 Tendon releases.
i now have a restricted socket inlace and am 4mths post op from my 5th THR.
its been one hell of a ride
left with much less movement, pain is starting to return in the tendon again, i can't walk far, cant lift my legend different movements are so very painful wish i could help more
That sounds awful Donni. So sorry. Is it the tendon that’s causing the pain and the restricted movement or the implant? Is the restricted socket inlace there to prevent another dislocation? Hope that at least works. Is there anything else they can do to help you? Good luck.
The approach with the very lowest dislocation rate is where they cut you on the side of the hip, not the front, not the back, but the side. That is how mine was done in France. Last week I read a research paper on anterior/posterior and the side and the side approach had the lowest dislocations.
You really shouldn't worry to much about dislocating as the percentage who go on to dislocate after total hip replacement was under 1% regardless of the approach used.
Hi Carol Yesi think we have my mind is fuzzy but I remember you having MS, it's not too much of a problem overall especially it you keep away from salsa dancing for a while, I'm just deciding that I want magic hip replacement, no cutting just wave a wand over it and hey presto LOL
As you say anterior dislocations are only about 18% of all dislocations. It is most likely to happen after the first month of surgery.
Yes my half hip replacement was done this way. I assume the revision will be done the same way. Really hope you’re right about the 1% risk but I expect the dislocation risk for revisions on very immobile patients is quite high so I’m hoping they can do something else as well to reduce risk.
Hi carol
I’m waiting for an app hopefully very soon to talk to my surgeon not sure what the answer will be if there even is one 😔
Sounds like a few of us are all in the same boat tho.
Hi Jodie
My 5 thr were done down the side a 12 inch cut
And I still had 2 dislocations.
Quick question. Does a dislocation require another op. Or can they manipulate it back in place?
Hi Carol, the answer is yes the hip can often be manipulated back into place using a local anaesthetic, but not always.
I'm very sorry that happened to you Donnie.
You, unfortunately, were one of the under 1%.
I hope everything finally resolved and that you are doing well now.
People need to read what you wrote correctly. It is NOT 18% of people who had a THR go on to dislocate their hip, what you wrote is of the less than 1% overall who do experience a hip dislocation of that less than 1%, that 18% of those were the anterior approach.
I said 18% of ALL dislocations, is that not what you are trying to say?
Hi
Definitely had to be knocked out to put mine back in place then another revision
