Consultant Profile

I have just found a profile of the consultant that I am due to see.  It states that he has carried out xxxx amount of THRs and half that amount; revisions.  I am not sure how to read this statistic.  Does that mean that he has had to revised 50% of his THRs, or does it mean that he has carried out those revisions on another consultant's work?  These numbers concern me, if it means the 50% of his work has had to be redone!

I would ask him straight out, he should be able to tell you, what is going on there.

I think it means he specialises in correcting others mistakes! That's what my Surgeon specialises in. Xx

I agree Gaby and the problem with statistics is that they can be interpreted in different ways as Susie has shown. My question would be of xxx number of THRs a surgeon has done, how many of them had to have revision operations and in what time scale.

I think its how many revisions he personally has done. Because each surgeon has their own profile

In addition to the comments already made here, it's worth considering that (probably) many revisions are due to the patient's mis-behaviour (or mis-adventure) rather than the quality of the surgeon's handiwork...

Also to bear in mind that revisions need doing when the original replacement wears out. 10 years ago these artificial joints had a much shorter lifespan. And people are living longer so perhaps more call for it?

On my surgeons profile it says "thr done in last 12 month" and "revisions done in last 12 months" but whose to say if they do get updated dvery year. But they should im guessing

As others have said it could mean he specialises in revisions. Plus revisions aren't always because something goes wrong. I should imagine there are plenty of people who had had their replacement hips a long time and need a new one which would be classed as a revision. Perhaps you could find a profile of your surgeon which details his career and qualifications.

Im going to be naughty and tell you my surgeons satistics. In the last 12 months hes done 127 thr but only done 19 revisions. But thats only in 12 months. But thats just my surgeons specific 12 months. If your surgeons info doesnt specify a time period theres a possibility that could be the number for his entire career.

Thank you.  I have discovered that the revisions mentioned on the consultant's profile, are not due to having to revise his work, necessarily, but of other surgeons, or just general wear and tear type issues, etc.

Yes, that is what I was saying.  I was looking at his statistics.

Hi Susie

I would suggest you check out the NJR (National Joint Register) which I believe is a most reliable source of info.

Both one year and three year results are shown and other charts, mortality etc.

Best of luck

I think not. Revision is the term for any repeat op. As you know that can apply when the hip needs renewing and that hopefully is at least 10 years after the first replacement. If he has been around a fair time I would be inclined to ask him how long the hips he does last before the need for revision. That is not to say that,  like Graham, there is sometimes not a need for a revision due to infection or misplacing of pothesis soon after the original op. I would ask him about that too.

Many thanks, Maggie.  I think you are quite right.  Also, It is beginning to look like the surgeon is revising other surgeon's bad ops, or simply putting to rights the results of bad moves on the part of the patient, either out of forgetfulness or an injury.
