Continued use of Amitryptaline for Migraines and side effects

Hi everyone, I ended up on Amitryptaline back in 2011, as a result of being told I had a Cholesterol Graniloma, which turned out to be incorrect.  I ended up at Stanford Neurology with Dr. Steven Mc Intyre.  He had me do an MRI on my neck and I ended up with Anterior and Posterior C-4 through C-7 Discectomy and Fusion in 2012.  The Amitryptaline was prescribed for multiple weekly migraines, with and without auras.  I started at 75 mg which gave me crazy hallucinations, (bright neon green writing over all the walls, and hands sticking out of my husband's hands, knitting.  Seriously.  So have been on 25 mg at night.  I still get migraines sometimes and take Imitrex.  Lately, my dreams, which have always been super detailed and very vivid, are even more so.  My questions:  1.  Can Amitryptaline be bad for you over an extended period of time. 2.  What can happen if I run out and I quit taking it for about a week?  3.  Migraines are starting to get more frequent, 3- 4 a week,  Is there another medication or treatment I should try?  I have been diagnosed with Concussion Syndrome as I keep hitting my head.  Oops!

Thank you !!!!

hi nicole

my son in law who had a bout of debilitating migraines and was off work for a month..was prescrived oxycodone, amitriptiline, amd other ,eds i cant remember so he tried Botox (had 12 injections across temples, between eye brows and and above. that didnt solve the problem and 2 weeks later at a follow up he had 6 more injections and since then no migraines. The botox injections were given by a reputable comestic surgeon ...and not a neurologist

Thank you for the info.  Yes I have heard more and more of people getting the Botox for their migraines. In have had shots before for my 57 year old wrinkles so maybe it could take care of both birds with the same shots so to speak.

hi nicole, to answer your qestion, you should not just stop amitriptyline you need to reduce your dose slowly.

Yes I have been told by many to never stop taking a medication cold turkey as it can cause seizures.

i like the way you think
