Anterior left THR replacement 18 days ago and continue to sleep on back or in recliner. Wondering when other people were able to sleep on side. I'm seeing surgeon next week and will ask him about it.
4 weeks. I had Anterior as well. I’m at 14 weeks now. Just know it gets better every day. Just do what your body tells you
I finally was comfortable enough to sleep on my side a few days ago. I am about 18 days out as well. Hopefully you will be comfortable soon.
I had a THR on left hip 2 weeks ago. Been making really good progress so far. I too had to sleep on my back for about 1st 10 days. Too painful to try and pivot on to side then chest. However, I would notice I got a little bit more flexible each day so each night I would try to see how far I could pivot before the pain and to shut it down. Keeping my legs/hips together, each night I would get a bit further. Until, one night no pain and I pivoted right on to my side then easily to my chest. Getting much better sleeps. You have to work it to the point that you can’t do any more then try again next day. Believe me, I was ecstatic to make this breakthrough.
Everyone is different but from internet articles, most say 4 weeks. I took sleeping pills while in hospital three weeks for tests and surgery. I had never taken them previously, nor could I sleep on my back well without them. Now, about seven weeks out I quit taking them last week despite being able to sleep in any position since 4 weeks. Now only melatonin after a week and things are improving.
I had my right THR over a year ago. Obviously after the op I had to sleep on my back. I got so used to it that I haven't slept on my side since. Am I unusual.
It's been 14 mo. for me still have to lay on my back. I have a long pillow under my knees. seems to help me. recently I try to walk abit every couple hrs. during the night. makes it much easier to get out of bed. I am still working but takes me long time toget ready & out the door
Hi there
I was told to sleep on my back for 6 weeks as turning over in bed, crossing my legs and sleeping on my side could dislocate the hip during the early stages of healing. Also it was just too uncomfortable to even try.
Take care
A
I slept on my back for the first 6 weeks and did get used to it!!! But I was told you can sleep on the other side with a pillow between your legs....I just wanted to stay safe I'm sure you could phone his secretary and ask...
Not really big problem since I do sleep o.k. I'll ask my surgeon when see him in few days.
I'll manage. I'm actually getting to it.
Did you have anterior or posterior surgery?
I was wondering if anyone experienced that. Maybe I'll get used to it, too.
Good to get off pills. I like that I might get more choice soon.
Dianne’s hi , you still way early in your THR. My hubby had 2 back to back THR. I learned a lot. You shouldn’t lay on your side for at least 3 months, because you don’t want that leg crossing over. Or to dislocate. Your at high risk for the first 3 months. Your only in 18 days. You have a while to go. Still ask your surgeon. But what we where told for the first 3 months you at to take it easy, walk, ice, test, and eat well. That’s it. If you have help my your spouse step up. Ask for the help, even if’s it’s dropping a hair brush, don’t bend down to get it. I looked into everything for my hubby, I did all the research, doctors, and prepared the house. It take a total of a year before your honing to be on your feet. That bone needs time to heal, the steel they put in you has to heal. Don’t be a hero, ask for help, nap when you can, and try not get frustrated. That was my hubby. And coming from the caregiver side of it, say thank you a lot. It means a lot. My hubby never did, but hey for better or worse!
I was supposed to be able to sleep on my side after 6 weeks, which I did after my THR, but it was nearly 2 years before I could do it for more than a few minutes following my revision.
Every operation gives a different recovery, times to do things and pains vary so much.
Each day less discomfort so easier to on and off bed. I usually wake up every few hours (same before surgery) so looking forward to ability to change sleeping position if I want.
I've noticed that, too, how it does get better each day. I've learned to patience. Approaching 3 weeks on Monday..
My surgeon will probably me to "go for it"
Rocket man hi my hubby had 2 back to back surgery’s. He’s still having trouble with the sleeping thing. And needs revision surgery on the first one. He’s a 1 1/2 in on first one and 7 months on second one. You must be patient with yourself your body went through a lot . And it’s healing. You have all those steel rods& and plastic in you now. Everyone heals differently. I keep telling my hubby that. Maybe go see a good PT. And get a message. I bought a few for hubby, it makes a big difference. And rest, ice, and walking when you can. Good luck.
