Copd and ascites

Hi I have put on 15 pounds of weight in my stomach it's very swollen and hard Iam also short of breath especially when bending down.... Could copd be causing this I have had a normal pft at my specialist

Thanks so much

Are you having normal bowel movements and

every day or two.

The swelling will affect your breathing as we have to breathe from the stomach and abdoman rather than the chest with COPD.

I would see your gp

Are you on steroids? X

Thanks Linda

No I'm not on many meds at all... My doc said my pulmonary function test results were normal and sent me on my way.... I think something is definitely going on just curious if copd or any lung disease can make acities occur and the 15 pound weight gain is scary

Hi oh and yes normal bm....

You should check with your doctor regarding the Ascites. If you have an accompanying cough, then water could be building up in your lungs too. Actually, this requires a visit with a Cardiologist, because ascites is a strong indicator for congestive heart failure. I know, Ive been there..large stomach, swollen ankles, swollen everywhere. Had a cough to go with it. The doctor kept focusing on my lungs (WHICH WERE BAD TOO), but I began feeling like I was drowning, and in reality I was drowning, because water was building up inside my lungs. Lucky for me, my chf was 100% reversible. But, the real indicators for chf are cough, sob, and ascites (swollen ankles, but the worse and dangerous is ascites in the stomach). My cardiologist told me to weigh myself every day... if I gain 3 lbs in one day, or, 5 in one week..is a strong indicator that water is building up too fast inside the body. Please check with you doctor about your ascites, since ascites usually indicates water build up in the stomach area, which is suppose to be dangerous...dont mean to scare you..sorry! :-)

You said it yourself. It is the weight gain I am afraid. So I should try losing it to help with your breathing.

Do you know what your body mass index is?

You measure your height and weight.

You can go to

Calculate my body mass index and there

you can check.

Up to 25 is normal

25 to 30 is over weight

Over 30 is obese

hope this helps.
