copd, and travelling abroad

my wife has had copd for a few years, and is on 2ltrs of oxyjen 24/7, we would love to go on holiday to spain. however, we just dont now where to start. getting thru the airport with  the portable cylinders, on the plane etc, and what happens in another country, any advice would be helpful, ta

Travel agent?  Call the airport?

I think you have to get a letter from doc to say your wife is fit to fly, then you will need to arrange for oxygen to be delivered to your destination for your arrival. I think oxygen is provided free in Spain but you will need to check this, maybe your your home oxygen supplier can help you but you need to get as much information as you can . Another alternative is to hire a portable concentrator but this could be expensive , you need  to cover all options before you arrange your holiday. Maybe your travel agent could advise you also .

Your best bet is to ring the British Lung Foundation helpline on Monday, check out their website.

From BLF's page on Holidays abroad:

Flying with a lung condition

Your lung condition does not necessarily prevent you from flying. Discuss your travel plans involving flying with your doctor. Most people with a lung condition, even if they use oxygen, can travel on planes. If you use oxygen therapy, you should ask your doctor if you might need additional oxygen on the plane. You may need to have a fitness to fly test to assess your oxygen need at altitude before you fly.

Once your doctor has given you the go-ahead, contact individual airlines to discuss your requirements and find out their policy about carrying and using oxygen on planes.

The European Lung Foundation provides information about the oxygen policies of over 100 airlines.

If you contact your travel agent/airline they will ensure you have special assistance at the airport and also the other end Spain is lovely and you would have no problem the airline will tell you if you need a GP letter to take the oxygen on the plane etc

good luck and hope you go and have a fab time
