We now have all the bills for my husband's THA (the insurance pays most of it). We weren't surprised that the hospital billed around $25K for his op and 1 night stay but were surprised that almost half of this, around $11,500, was for the implant. Had no idea it costs that much. I thought this might be interesting since many forum members utilizing the NHS don't get to know the costs.
Maybe we need to up his insurance now he's worth more haha

Both my THR Sugeries were a shock to see the bill. I am thankful to have insurance. In and out in 4 days the first one @ over $22,000. Ten years later hospital for 2 days bill was $34,000,
There are many reasons for prices going up. After the 2nd THR, a few months later finding out it was recalled by the manufacturer for MOM,metal on metal components. I asked my dr about that and he said no mom components. So it cost $40,000 for a revision, much more complicated surgery for me that the usual.
Hospitols are trying to obtain THR components at better prices. However technology, law suits for MOM components have been responsible for the higher prices in the industry in many cases.
Its always something just to name a few reasons. See manufactures online for more info related costs and weight of components. Now us hippies can say at least 12 #'s can be taken off our weigh in at the doctors office for both hip implants . Hehe.
Many thanks for sharing this - very interesting as these costs plus four PT sessions (if taken at the hospital where the surgery was done) are all covered by our provincial health insurance in Ontario (except for the accessories that we use at home (toilet seat, cane, walker, shower seat, picker upper, etc.). So I had not idea of the costs. Thanks again.

I'm in the UK but chose to go the private route seeing I had been paying in to my insurance for the last 20 years. I havent had the breakdown but I was surprised how little the surgeon gets.
I believe the total cost of my procedure, hospital bills and all, will be in the region of £12,500 to £15,000. I was told that there would be a shortfall in the surgeon fee which would be covered by the insurance. I thought we would be talking megabucks, however his fee only made up around £700 of that. I found it surprising anyway 
Interesting stats, thanks. We are in the Boston area and our top class healthcare doesn't come cheap. The figure I gave ($25K ish) was just the hospital bill so didn't include the surgeons bill (around $4K) home health nursing and PT (about $2K) and out patient PT (ongoing so not sure what that will add up to). All finished I guess it will likely be around the national average but not close to the Boston average, maybe because he only stayed 1 night in hospital.
Agreed that is far more modest than I expected albeit but not too bad for a 2hr procedure plus prep, pre and post appointments. My surgeon has done ~ 150 hip replacements and he specializes in knees!

5 months ago in the Chicago, Illinois USA, the cost for my LTHR was $ 88,000.00. Price did not include rehab sessions.
