Could I have shingles?

hi, ive been experiencing some aches and pains over the past few days, it started off with aching in my wrists up to my elbows, now my joints in my legs and ankles are aching, also abit of a stiff/ sore neck and top of spine is sore. In general my whole body is aching, feels sore to touch, throbbing and from time to time can get sharp pains. I don't have any rash as yet.

I have been in contact with chicken pox lately so didn't know if Id caught anything from that at.

any advice would be appreciated

xx

Have you had chicken pox in the past? If so, according to my GP, you are OK if you have had contact with someone with chicken pox or shingles, as I had the same situation not so long ago. If you have had chicken pox you can always develop shingles, but not catch it.

Yes I had them when I was a baby. It's just that I work with children everyday and chicken pox are going around and with feeling the way I am is making me abit curious. Thanks x

My husband and father have had shingles in the past and it only effects one arier at a time .i.e arm into neck perhaps that side of head ,or round shoulder into waist . It's not like chicken with spots all over .The spots when they appear can be in clusters almost look like small blood blisters . But get checkedd out by doctor because if it is the start of shingles the sooner they can get you on pain nerve damage medication the shorter time you will have it . Hope you soon feel better

Hi Sara and Welcome,

I'm not a Dr or anything but have many illnesses myself and my Aunt had shingles all of the time off and on!!! From what I know shingles is usually around the upper body below the breast and all the way around your back! You will also break out in a rash and the pain is almost unbearable! It sounds to me like maybe some form of arthritis! I would say the first thing to do is find a good Rhemotologist and let them try and a Diagnose you if your MD has talked to you and you are not getting any answers! How long has it been going on? Could also be the starting of Fibromyalgia but along with that comes many many more symptoms, which it doesn't sound like you have!!! The key word to all of this message is a GOOD Rhemotologist!!! I am in FL and the Drs in this entire area, at least the same ones I am running into since I lost my wonderful MD that I had here for seven years is now gone!!! I wish you the best, a good MD will help you get to the proper Dr and it sounds like some sort of arthritis!!! Best of luck, hope your pain stays minimal!!!

Hi sarah, are you a sufferer of PMR, if so for how long and what level of medication and what medication are you on. I'm thinking maybe you may have only just tapered down? And this might be a sort of flare? Christina

You can't "catch" shingles - it happens because of the chicken pox virus reactivating from being dormant in nerve endings after having it as a child. The first signs of shingles is intense itching before a rash, maybe a runny nose like with chicken pox but what you describe isn't shingles-like.

Do you have polymyalgia rheumatica? Are you on pred? This forum is for PMR patients - and what you describe could be a flare due to reducing the dose, but if you don't have PMR that doesn't apply!
