Countdown to surgery

Hello Bunionettes and former Bunion people. I'm scheduled to have surgery to remove a bunion and straighten a hammer toe on my left foot on 11th October. I came across this discussion forum yesterday and feel relieved but also daunted to read about what awaits me. I've picked up lots of helpful tips already.

Any advice on using crutches? I'm left-handed and have wrist and forearm pain on the left side (just had results of an ultrasound scan and it is not carpal tunnel syndrome but is definitely painful). I suspect that using crutches puts extra pressure on wrist and forearm so this could be challenging. At least I'll already be on painkillers!

Hi Jayniejay.  There's lots of great info on this forum, I have found it very useful.

I am approaching 5 weeks post bunion op and I too was worried about crutches as I have a problem with my left shoulder.  Luckily its been OK so far.  I know my weak spot so have been using deep heat on it regularly.  The crutches have been hard work but I have been careful with them.  My friend who is in a wheelchair lent me some gloves which have been a big help protecting my hands.  My wrists ached for the first week but then it settled down.  The plus about the crutches is that I have great Abs from them :-)

Good luck with your surgery and rest as much as possible.

I knew there would be some positives! I'll be looking out for some padded gloves and deep heat ointment. Hope you're recovering well.

Welcome to the forum ,

The best person to teach you how to use crutches is Physio  best to get someone to video it while she is showing you I didn't use them correctly and ended with dislocated shoulder!
