Cracked hip cup

Morning hippies. Bad news for me I'm afraid but wondering if anyone has had this! I am 2 years 2 months post THR it's been amazing the best thing I ever had done but unfortunately the last few weeks are painful and I noticed my leg seemed a lot shorter than it was. (I had it lengthened too!) Groin pain and outer pain so I told my physio ( physio from TKR 11 weeks ago) refered me 3 days later to surgeon so tells me my hip cup is battered and cracked. Somewhat of a shock!! Yes it hurts really bad at times and cannot walk some days. Surgeon says he's going to infuse a resin to try seal cracks plus steroid injection to strengthen hip. I'm having spinal surgery end of June so he said he won't do any major surgery until I have recovered from that. Can anyone give me any reassurance has anyone hax this?

Oh dear I feel for you. Was a reason given as to why it happened?. Do you have osteoporosis?

I keep falling over due to nerve damage from my spine . I have fallen downstairs 3 times and had and also had a couple of nasty falls. Got up took pain relief iced elevated massaged etc except reporting to Dr. I'm beginning to feel despondent about all this. I know i shouldn't though

Odear Shirley, everyone's fear in first couple of years.  You must have had the plastic cup?  I think they use those if you're small boned.   My surgeon showed me the metal cup and the plastic one. Night and day.  It was mini Lego vs huge furniture castor!although my metal components have resulted in the hip sticking out.   Let us hope that the injectable resin can seal everyhting securely so you can be well before yet more surgery. Pse let us know which cup you had so we can be aware (next time God help us). Sarah

SO sorry to read this Shirley .... please don't beat your self up - here's hoping with you that all will go well - take good care of your self - big hug -

Hi Shirley! Poor you! But try to remain positive! I am just over 11 weeks! But now have my right knee that clicks each time I walk! But one step for me at a time! I can't face another op! I am having spa sessions and reflexology! Hope you will improve soon! Regards Amanda

Yes I have tge plastic one but nit through choice as I am allergic to cobalt and nickle so plastic and ceramic hip and same with knee. I forget sometimes that I have to be more aware but at the same time they are supposed to have a longer life span and are normally given to younger people. There's me thinking I was lucky getting a good deal haha

Thank you Amanda. Yes I'm a normally very positive. Recovered remarkably quick from THR and TKR even after several setbacks I battled on and was way ahead of myself. Life isn't fair is it. Many many people a lot older than ourselves are a hundred times fitter yet a million others of us go through hell and back. Good job I don't give up

Oh my goodness you sure have had a tuff time. People have had success with the cement injected to fix and stabilize spinal fractures. So it should do the same for your hip cup. Also will relieve your pain.

You have the right to have sad feelings about all that has happened.and it's okay to express them here.xxx.best to you

Hi Shirley: Replace the cup.  Ceramic is best.  Biolox Delta is the best ceramic so far.

A ceramic ball and a ceramic cup.  Trying to fix plastic with resin is only a stop gap measure, not a 'permanent solution',  Do it as right as you can as soon as you can.  With respect to the strength of ceramic, the Zimmer shows a golfer hitting a ceramic ball down the fairway.  The ceramic was not damaged, but it appeared that the golf club sustained a major dent.

Don't take my word for it. Educate yourself.  I have some other posts that might help you decide.

Personally, I am trying to find the best solution for myself, before I commit to the operation.  As far as I know, once a person commits to the operation, there is no reversing of that decision.

Thank you mikey . Yes I know ceramic is best but I was given plastic cup as surgeon said it was stronger and resin was suggested as I can't have surgery for a while as my body couldn't take it he said. I am having spinal surgery end of June and that will take some time to recover and I only had a TKR 12 weeks ago so I have to wait as long as I can with fingers crossed.
