Crutches for how long ?????

Hay lovely hippys, I'm 2 weeks 3 days . Iv tried walking round the house with one crutch but it's really not working, far too painful very unsteady, feels like my hip is about to snap so assuming that I'm totally not ready. So I'm wondering how long until you guys were off crutches completely or even down to one , just around the house . ???????

I was at least 4 weeks before I tried..... everyone is so different, and your body will tell you...

I am now 9 weeks and walk indoors without any crutches but have to take them out with me having had both hips done and awaiting my knees I am not confident without them outside.

So you will only know by trying  but leave it a few days....

Hi had 2 sticks till week 3 I now use one stick I am week 5

Hi I'm 3 weeks and 5 days. 1 was on 2 sticks around the house for 2 1/2 weeks. Down to 1 in the house past week. I've taken 2 with me on my walks up until today when I took 1. Don't rush is my advice. I've been troubled with thigh/ muscle pain so listen to your twinges. Good luck with recovery

Just take it steadily. I was on 1 crutch after about day 5, but it felt very comfortable. Don't do anything that hurts. (Did they explain in hospital that it's the opposite crutch that you use? I had right hip replaced, so I used crutch in left hand.) I still used 2 crutches outside until my 6 week physio, when I was discharged without them. I wish you all the best.

Day 5 😱😱😱 amazingly fast recovery. I was in hospital for 6 days . Every case is different I guess. Wow

Yes everyone is different. My hip replacement was very straightforward, and apart from the hip I was reasonably fit. Don't rush, it's important that you take your time, and keep comfortable. Don't take any risks. Good luck.

Hi Bobbie.

It was 7 days today tha I had my THR and am walking around the house with 1 crutch still feel an it instead without any support, but as all the other hippies say. Everyone is different and your body will let you know when you are ready.

Take care and good luck πŸ˜€

I am 2weeks 2 days bobbi and cannot do one crutch .. It's two or a Zimmer . Bad leg don't feel it will hold me up with one crutch so we are about the same X

I'm 11 days post op. I started with a walker and now I am on a quad cane. Works great for balance and really works my quad on the surgical site. I have a childhood abnormality in my hip that was fixed so now I have to learn to walk "right" after all these years. My leg was lengthened almost 1 inch. I'm 63 and relearning to walk. Mentally it's a real challenge. One day at a time!

Everyone is different. I started out with walker. Then around week 5 I started very slowly with crutches. Then week 8 with one crutch. Just started out patient physical therapy so hope to start using cane only but it may take a few weeks as hip muscles are very weak. I'm hoping to be free of all aides!! πŸ€“ Best of luck to you! LD

hi bobbie,

well ... what can I say ... as long as you struggle and feel pain, it might be just too early to attempt  walking with one crutch or none --- we all want to get rid of those things as soon as possible, don't we - yet our body is not ready yet by a long shot - you just had this major surgery where you were cut, not only muscles and tendons but also bone, joint forcefully dislocated, after thorough preparation, hardware was banged in to the cavities -  everything was skillfully put together again and body starts the healing process -

and that takes time - for some of us longer than for others -

I live alone (through 2 THR's) and had a 4 wheeled walker, or rollator, no crutches  - I think this is easier to manoevre around with than crutches -

Are you full weight bearing?

Please continue touse supporting walking aids until you are confient, are in balance, have no pain when walking ---

be gentle with your self and allow healing to take place ..

big warm hug

renee

Hi renee , thank you 😊, I guess I'm in a hurry 😒, I didn't expect the answers to be so varied 😳, just goes to show . Gosh living alone must be really hard . X and yes I needed to hear and be reminded just how much they did πŸ˜‚ .

Not in bed all time now which is a positive xx

Thank you. But it has not been an easy road. 😞 But I'm getting there! Wishing you all the best in your recovery!! LD

Bobbie ,  you sure you are using your crutch on the correct side ???  have you tried "furniture surfing"  around the kitchen, it might give you some confidence... but if really painful, can you give your  hospital ward a call or the doc , dont suffer, because once you get use to your new hip it will be amazing xx good luck
