Has anyone had a Custom made knee which is measured through an MRI scan.
The Surgeon uses guides to cut and fit the knew knee which should be the same shape and size of your old knee.

I had this procedure done here in the US, called Makoplasty. It was done as an outpatient surgery (not even overnight in hospital) . I'm now 16 wks PO and am able to do whatever I want, and knee seems almost completely normal, have some creeks and slightly decreased range of motion. Recovery for me was smooth and not extremely painful, only took narcotics for two days, and then only a week for sleep. Don't have anything to compare to, but I would say very much worth the customization,
Hi Mary i dont know if mine has been done that way my surgeon uses computer aided surgery i have a scar where my knee has been replaced and one below it where a camera was placed still hurts like hell though lol.

i have had both. One at Oregon Health Science University and one at Coon Clinic in the Napa Valley. The right one done at Coon in 2014 recovered faster. It was not done by the MRI. OHSU was MRI and was was done in Mar 2016. I am still struggling with inflammation but bend is 125 and acceptable. It is not what the right one is as I can completely put my right leg under my Buttocks. I believe it is still all up to the surgeon and how skillful they are.

Hi Mary .. haven't had a custom made knee but our MRI's (in Australia) are sent to the US for the tools to be designed for your particular knee! I have a 30cm scar from mine and have recently found out that my tkr leg is just a fraction shorter than my other one.

This is what is worrying me. There are more risks that we find out after the operation.
I'm not in great pain. Just stiffness when coming downstairs. I feel the bones rubbing but apart from that ...and struggling first thing I seem to manage.
I'm advised to have the tkr now before it gets worse, but I could be in a worse position after
I understand your anxiety. I was the same. 10 days post op now. Do you prefer op and post op exercises and ice ice ice afterwards. Still struggling with pain and movement

I wasn't coping too well as I have had a hip bursitis for the last 6mths and nothing has helped .. but saw my surgeon today and he had a cancelation for this coming Monday so sort of in a bit of shock that this knee is happening so quick!
As much as I don't like my knew knee I do know in time it will become normal and I just have to learn to embrace it especially seen how in 5 days they'll both be done. I've had alot of issues with mine but in the long run don't regret having it done .. just sometimes sick of all the exercise etc... Mine were caused by being run over by a truck as a pedestrian so I haven't really had a choice as to have them done or not!

I had a TKR done in July 2015 in a BMI Hospital in North London. The prothesis used for me is called Conformis. My xrays were sent to USA and the knee was made there. My surgeon is called Henry Atkinson and he is an amazing man. I had a real battle with my medical insurers as to whether they would pay as at that time the process had not been approved by N.I.C.E. But 2 days before the op they agreed.
I was walking unaided very quickly afterwards. I was only ever given one stick anyway. And I do not limp.
The scar is now just a faint line but the knee is slightly larger than the other one and TBH after 15 months I doubt it will change. Probably not noticable to others apart from me. I am still slightly numb in that area.
I know people who have had a normal knee replacement and they are at the same stage as me with no problems either but my thoughts are that maybe this will last a bit longer. Who knows!
Worrying about the op isnormal but look how many people have it done and tell the tale! Yes its painful after, but thats what we have medication for. I only had paracetamol and anti inflammatory drugs because I really hate the spaced out feeling that strong drugs give.
Sleeping can be challenging for a few weeks but honestly it really does improve.

is still swollen and somewhat painful using steps. As far as bending, that is
excellent.
I am sure what my surgeon did.

The Biomet is not a custom made knee. They do use the scan to make a cutting guide to help the operation but apart from that it is only used to pick out the nearest size to your knee - it won't necessarily be the same shape and size. This isn't to say it won't do very well!
The only true custom made knees are Conformis.

It called a Signature series. They scanned my hip knee and ankle. Then the scan was sent to Brussels where jigs are made.
I've read up on this.
It's all very technical.
Does that explain anything Dean.
Or have they glorified the term custom made.
