I used to be a serious cyclist but had to give up on road cycling due to spinal stenosis. However I ran across an engineer who was willing to trade me his high end mountain bike for my high end road bike. Good deal! Anyway, at five weeks I started cycling around town, mostly to and from the gym. However, there are few flat roads here in the Pyrenees. At first I would ride downhill to the gym and took the least steep way home. Now, only a few weeks later, I take the steep route, very comfortably. Maybe it is due to lifetime miles? I discovered very little if any stress put on my hip. I guess also it is due to staying in a higher gear than previous. Cycling is the most doctor recommended exercise for recovery from surgery and swimming is next. Don’t overdo and cycle or swim with your ego.
I do 5 miles biking every day and swim 3x week, then gym every day. My legs have never felt better.
Wow! That's great.
Wish I could still do road bike! I imagine I do about 4 on mountain
I am getting a 10 gear trike. I was the captain of the MS bike tour for 7 years and that is a goal to get back to biking at least 33 km and be able to stand afterwards. I love biking and supporting an amazing cause and bike with patients that have MS.
Almost 13wks post left THR. Was a regular road cyclist before my opinion and now thinking about getting back on the road.
Used cleared pedals before my opinion but nervous about using them again in the short term. Can't afford any prat-falls on my new ceramic hip. Just fitted some flat pedals today and hope to have some gentle rides next week - weather permitting.
My surgeon recommended cycling so I'm looking forward to hitting the saddle soon.
What I discovered is those surgeons into cycling recommended it for me.
Dashed auto correction - opinion should read operation and cleared should read cleated
My surgeon just reminded me that I have no restrictions but to not fall so I will ride a trike. I am fortunate to have gotten 2 new hips and be pain free.
I too was using cleated pedals for many years but stick to spd now. No problem.
Two at once? Holy crap!
Got a resection in December 2016 and the other hip done in July. My first hip replacement lasted 21 years. 21 years of freedom.
Ducksoup,
Sounds like you're doing really well. I'd suspect your entry into the Tour de France by next year. Biking the Pyrenees even if it's only back and forth to the gym after a hip replacement is a major accomplishment. Congratulations.
Jim
Not really, we are in the foothills, just 30km from ski resorts
