I have recently been diagnosed diabetic type 2. I'm not overweight and have been a regular cyclist for more than 20 years. I was prescribed 80mg tablet of Gliclazide and this brought my sugar levels down (sometimes too low)
I'm wanting to continue my cycling but have lost confidence as everytime I excercise (even a 1hour walk) will reduce my sugar level to 3 or 4.
Are there any sports people got any advice as to how you deal with this please?
Tell your GP as they may ask you to adust your dose on the days you cycle, even something as simple as the time it is taken can make a big difference, Did This for my sister and it worked. Had to do it on a trial and error basis but with GP and diabetic nurse. input it was done quickly and safely.
Can also ask for a refferal to someone who specialises in sports medicine, we are lucky as the main olympic medical centre is near here. Should be one near you though and they are a great help.

I find if I need to do more then normal I top up my carbs it gets me through. But definitely speak to your nurse specialist In diabetics as they often know more than your GP. I have a tendency for my blood sugars to drop quite easily so I eat something every 2-3 hrs.
