After months of waiting I have eventually got a date for my op next Friday 17th April via keyhole, but my cyst has now trebled in size since it was first found. Seven weeks ago it measured 14.5 x 9 x 11cm

I was wondering whats the largest cyst and ovary that anyone has had removed via keyhole?

Hi Amandah, just noticed your post, all the very best wishes for your op, mine was 20cms x 20 I had a small incision just below belly button and yours is smaller, it will be fine I'm sure x

My daughters was 30cmx32cmx20cm. She didnt know she had one no symptoms. They had to cut from her bellybutton down about 20cm. They drained 12 litres of fluid out of it. Shes all good now. Best of luck with it all

Oh my gosh Stella, that's awful, your poor daughter - how is she now ? I thought mine was bad and for me it's been a long drawn out recovery, hope she's gaining her strength back, x

Shes fine. She bounced back quickly she was in hospital a week. And after a week doing nothing at home was going stir crazy. She had a little pain but got back to her drawing. She was 18 at the time

That's good, you recover very quickly when young, older takes a lot longer, well in my case anyway x

Not keyhole but I recently had a complex cyst removed that was similar in dimension to yours (16cm x 7cm x 13cm). The size and the fact that there was a solid part meant that they couldn't do keyhole surgery but the incision isn't half as big/ obvious as I though it would be. It's a horizontal incision, under bikini line, about 8-9cm and healing well. Hope that that's some help. Best of luck with your operation!

Could I ask how was your healing process? Did it hurt alot after the surgery, were you able to walk or do normal activities. I'm having a laparotomy for a dermoid cyst removal (8cms) and I'm really scared of the scar it will leave.

Hi, I'm three weeks on now as of tomorrow and it's getting a lot easier. Do you know where the incision will be? Mine is very easy to hide being below the bikini line. My scar is healing well and it's nothing I would have been worried about beforehand if I'd have known how okay it'd look! I know that everybody is different and heals in different ways but it's a fairly straight forward procedure and an 8cm incision is definitely not the worst of them.

The first week after the surgery was tough, just getting back to walking around and I was getting tired very quickly with any activity. Now I'm able to pretty much go about my everyday activities but I still have to be careful with carrying heavy things, too much bending down etc. I'm definitely still taking it easy at this stage still and resting as often as I can. Pain-wise it hasn't been too bad and I was well stocked up on pain medication both in the hospital and when I was leaving. The worst pain for me was the shoulder pain after the operation, something that I wasn't prepared for. Air gets into your body during surgery and it's very common to have bad shoulder pain for a few days as the air rises to there. Just a heads up! Very best of luck with the operation and everything!

I'm getting the incision in my bikini too! I was suggested two different types of surgery keyhole or laparotomy (open cut) surgery which my surgeon stated that this has a better chance of preserving/saving my ovary.. Both specialist work very differently. Could I ask did you do laprotomy due to the size of your cyst? 

I want to do keyhole... but the fact that i'm so young only 20 years old and that supposedly (open cut) surgery has a higher rate of saving my ovary, i'm leaning towards that surgery option more even though it's not my preferred method

It was most likely due to the size of the cyst alright because it was a big one and the fact that it was a complex cyst (hard part as well as fluid filled part). From the start they said they'd have to do a laparotomy so I wasn't given the option. I had one ovary removed too but they had told me from the start that I would more than likely have to, because it was so big and had been there for a long time so there was only a small chance of the ovary still being healthy. I'm in my twenties too and the doctor was very sympathetic and aware of the fact that I have my whole reproductive life ahead. If they've said that there would be a better chance of saving the ovary with a laparotomy I would definitely strongly consider it anyway.
