hi my 75yr old father has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. What is the best advise i can give him?
Cut out sugar completely. 800 calorie a day diet. See Newcastle research https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)33102-1/fulltext
@alisonjane44, it depends entirely on the details, it can be as simple as diet, or as complex as insulin and other drugs. Take it seriously but don’t worry too much, he’s got LOTS of company!
Also exercise - just getting out and walking a couple of miles a day is as powerful as any drug. If you can tell us his A1C and BG numbers, and any drugs they’ve prescribed, we can give you more detailed answers.
Any word that ends in -ose is sugar: sucrose, fructose, dexatrose, high fructose corn syrup, etc. Read the ingredients before assuming something is safe.
I keep hearing a myth that if till the advance age, one remains safe from this problem, he does not get diabetes at all. The exceptions can always be there.
Your father may try controlling it by totally cutting out sugar and also whatever exercise (walking etc) possible for him. He may succeed. If not then of course medication becomes necessary. I wish him the best of luck.
