Damaged to vitreous humour

i have now had two injections of Lucentis, following a central retinal vein occlusion in my left eye.  The second time, I noticed a dark ring with tiny squiggly lights around the area of swelling. I thought it was just the drug working on the swelling but I still have a dark ring on the retina, causing distortion of vision.  A doctor at the eye clinic said it was damage to the vitreous humour and as it hasn't improved, I'm now worried about having any more injections  in case I lose any more sight

has anyone else had this?

Hi, Allison:

I also have had an RVO, last June.  Since then I have had five injections of Lucentis.

I have not experienced a dark ring on the retina, as you have.

What advice does your retina specialist give to you regarding this reaction you are

experiencing?

Beverly

Hi Beverly,

so far, I've just had an emergency appt at the eye clinic because I was worried about it. The swelling had gone down completely but I was worried about the cause of the ring.  Didn't see my consultant but the doctor I saw is very good.  She said it was the vitreous humour that was causing the ring and gave me a leaflet about vitreous humour and floaters etc. my next appt to see the consultant is not till 19th Jan - but I suspect the swelling will have returned before then, so I'll have to make yet another emergency appt to bring the next injection forward, as I had to do this time.  But I'm obviously going to pin him down about side effects - I really don't want long term damage to my sight!

What did they say was the cause of your RVO?  It was the third time I'd had them - the first time was when I was on the Pill in my 20's.  This time, he suspects it was a little known side effect of being on anti-depressants. He's writing a paper on it, as GP's are very cynical.

Hi, Allison:

You mention that you see a "consultant."  What exactly are his/her qualifications?

You should be seeing a Retina Specialist;  I hope that is what your consultant is.

If not, I suggest you find one.

The cause of my RVO cannot be definitely determined, but it is probably due to

hardening of the arteries, age, etc.  It is in the central vein as opposed to one of

the branch veins.  Like you, I am so concerned about keeping my vision, especially

since my other eye has a wrinkled retina which occurred about 25 years ago and

which distorts the vision in that eye.

I am amazed that you had this happen three times and so young when the first RVO

occurred.  I had always thought that this was an older person's issue.

Besides being sure that you are seeing a Retina Specialist, I would suggest you could

call the company that makes Lucentis as well as googling info on side effects of

having Lucentis put in the eye.  Knowledge is power;  the more we know the better.

Do you think it is the shot that is doing this?

Let me know how you are doing and if that dark ring is disappearing.

I totally understand your concern!

Beverly
