Day 4 it does get better, doesn't it?

This morning is the first day that I have the energy to put finger to texting, the first day I actually can put two thoughts together. I lost weight, I exercised to be prepared, and.......have I been hit by a truck? I did not expect to feel so tired. And why do they not make bum shaped cushions? The loo is the most comfortable place.......how is that? I never appreciated fully, how grateful I should be that I have a wonderful, caring husband by my side.

How long before I wake up with the energy I had prior to this op?

Hello Sonia and welcome to hippy land. You must remember you have had major surgery and need to take things slowly. Everyone heals at a different rate and of course age plays a part. I am 66, live alone and although support from family and friends had to do most things for my self. Like you lost weight so energy low. Began to go out around day 15 and increased walking daily. Now entering week 8 and still using support outside but not inside. Appetite improved and this gives more energy. Can walk 4 miles in a stretch but slowly. Hang on in there do your given exercises and rest. Recommend chocolate. Some days you will go backwards and this is normal. Keep a daily log so you can see your progress. I have my check up next week and hope to have all restrictions lifted

Hi Sonia! Well done you! Have you got a raised toilet seat and grabbers? Things will improve, as each day goes! But make sure you stick to the 6week rule!! I am 9weeks tomorrow! Still bruised and swollen! But tomorrow I am starting hydrotherapy! As I suffer from tension as well.! Regards Amanda

Thanks Ann. 4miles? I would be grateful for 1 lols. That's a brilliant result for you, and you must feel energised to do it. I think I blocked out the implications before having this done, but have already noticed that I can stand up straighter, more easily even if I cant string more than 4 words together. Its talking, and reading....both of which I can usually do without effort. At the moment it seems beyond me to do anything other than being uncomfortable, and constantly moving to try to attain it lols. Well done you, and I hope I have a similar story in 7 weeks time.xx

Hi Amanda. Yes the loo seat is wonderful, it is shaped! Lols. I have everything I need, and I must say the hospital care etc was great. I am going to try a thin pillow tonight beneath my knees. I have been getting a lot of pain in the knee, but the hip is great. I was mortified when I couldnt lift my leg from the bed, but I have found some things are easy and some need a little work right now. It is wonderful to be able to straighten up easily when standing. Its the emotions are up and down like a yoyo. Eric is making me the best pick me up.......lemon drizzle buns. I have been on ahealthy eating regime since last June and have managed to lose 4 st, a struggle because of limited mobility. Today, I need a lemon intake as My energy is low. Only one, but it is a treat. I strongly recommend being spoilt lols. 9 weeks, wow I cant imagine that far ahead. It was funny last night doing the fragmin jab. I deliberately didnt watch the cd, the nurse didnt ask me to do it, so theres me with the needle.Eric watching and talk about the blind leading the blind. I just didnt want to deal with it till I had to. I did manage to work out where to find the needle eventually, and tonight shouldnt have me looking at it for quite so long. Do you work Amanda? I should think that would be hard. I am retired, and hope that this will last. I didnt realise it would be such a big deal if I am honest. However, maybe its a good job that we dont know, or dont remember how the first few days feel lols.xx

Hello Sonia just back from 2 miles non stop and really exhausted, does not help that my house is up the hill. Got a bit of pain at top of the femur and in groin but it will ease with rest. The trip took just under an hour. Using 2 walking poles when out on uneven terrain

Time for feet up, pop lunch in oven and source a film

Funny thing about talking and reading I could not type correctly and concentration was an issue all resolved now

Hope you get some rest in between the prescribed exercises

Ann

hi sonia,

you are doing great ... day 4 I was still in the hospital - oh, the things we take for granted !!! I had no energy whatsoever prior surgery - the pain was so bad at some point -- plus I gained weight ... in spite of my intentions I entered surgery as a fluffy ragdoll ... So, for me I have more energy  after surgery than before surgery ... there is hope !!!  just be patient, that is the name of this game -

big hug

Well done! Wish I could give you one of my lemon drizzle buns that Eric has made me. Only one as a treat, but I can already feel my sugar buzz. Enjoy your lunch and film.

oh yes, Eric is the seargent major when it comes to exercises! No getting away with them.xx

Hi Renee, i stuck to a healthy eating regime, it was really a necessity. I also did a daily upper body set of exercises. I still feel like I have been hit by a bus! However, it would have been worse without. I think it is definitely one day at a time. I feel more alert today, so tomorrow should hopefully be better. I did not realise how much it would take out of me, the human body is amazing!xx

im day 4 too and feel like every muscle in my lower body has been ripped off and nailed back on. Im utterly exhausted. having a bare minimum wash this morning tired me to the point of shaking like a leaf but i think its all normal. we have had major surgery and our bodies are working hard to repair the damage. every day from here will be easier i think. listen to your body. if you need to rest, rest.

That is exactly what the lady physio said on Friday. Totall different to the male. He wanted me out walking with 2 sticks after having been on crutches for 2 yrs and neuropathy in both feet. I felt as if I was letting everyone down, untill she said listen to your body and do what you can. My feet go all over the place, and I cannot see me trusting myself outside without the crutches, certainly not for a while. If I can get to using a stick indoors as I used to, I will be well pleased. My knee hurts and I get acute needle pains from groin down inner leg. No pain in the hip area, and I can stand up straight with no effort. I suppose we are all different, and that is my only critisism of the procedure. We are different, age can be a major factor, and our other health issues all combine in our profile.

helen, washing is a minor issue....may turn into a major whiffy one in a few days, but one without is not the end of the world.

have you read at all? I havent looked at a page, my brain seems to have shut down to only taking in what is necessary. A pillow under my knees tonight, and a good sleep, and tomorrow is day 5 for both of us.xx

It does get better honesty! Brain mush slowly clears and the muscles slowly repair but you must listen to your body and to the lovely people on this forum

Take care xxx

Thanks Valerie.xx

Hi Sonia, you have just had a major op, it takes time for your body to get over that.

You will start to feel better in time but the first week I felt like that and a bit better second week and so on.

Be patient and go with it, its worth it in the end? I'm 15 weeks and doing everything I did before but I still get tired doing it.

I didn't get tired before.

My brain is mush lols. Well today is nearly over and tomorrow is another day, onwards and forwards xx

know it's not the same op but still a major one anyway. When I had my hysterectomy I  told the doctor after 3 months I still felt tired, he said" you just had a major op and although your ok to go back to work, it will take your body 12 months to fully recover, come back then and tell me your tired and I'll do something about it " He was right too.... ((((((big hugs)))))))))

Hi Sonia

I am now nearly 4 weeks post op, but for the first 5 days, I didn't read, txt or go on laptop, etc, found it very difficult to concentrate and felt so tired, all of which I put down to the anaesthetic.

Now I am walking mostly using one crutch, and apart from not being able to change my teddies myself, can do much much more.  Obviously still sticking to the 6 week rules of sleeping on back (which gives me terrible back ache by the morning, but quickly wears off), not bending, etc.

Got my check up in about 3 weeks time and hope to be able to drive at that point.

I was so frightened of what to expect after the op, but now I can honestly say it isn't as bad as I imagined it would be.

So yes, it will get better, Day 5 was my turning point for being back to normal "alert" self lol.

Stick with it, it does get better.

Regards

Thanks gill I am 15 weeks and working and doing anything is making me tired and was beginning to wonder why but obviously it is due to the op still. I just seem to hit a wall of tiredness, I was going to mention it to surgeon when I see him a couple of weeks but I think you've answered my question and its quite normal.

Thanks, I have felt so tired and I thought I ought to feel more with it. Thanks for that.xx

Hi Sonia

Give yourself a break your body has been through a trauma and you are bound to been time to recover.

I had experienced previous surgeries but nothing prepared me for this in the first week. I still get tired but after the first week I would wake up planning what I was going to achieve that day, some of your energy comes back and you feel better and more confident.

You will get there but your body is a good indicator as to what you can do, frustrating as it is, just go with it.

Best wishes
