day 4-terrible stomach

Hi all,

i am on day 4 of taking Citalopram 20mg. Within hours of starting I had the usual side effects, nausea, headache, spaced out feeling, and a slight funny tum, thankfully this have improved alot today, however the stomachache has got worse, is this normal?

I have suffered with ibs in the past but not for years but the symptoms are just the same if not worse, is this the tablets and if so what is th best treatment.

Also i have notticed that my appetite has increased greatly, i have just recently lost a stone a still have abit more to go, so not looking for a weight gain, does this settle??

Thank you xxxx

Hi Jackie,

I'm on day 5 of Citalopram 20mg. I can't answer all your questions, but based on my own experience I think it is quite likely that the changes you have noticed are due to the medication. I've not experienced nausea or headaches, however Citalopram seems to have affected my gut (no history of IBS).

Like you I have found that I get hungrier than usual, especially when I'm lying awake at night. I'm assuming that I will only put on weight if I eat more so I ignore the hunger pangs. If they carry on I will eat a bit less during the day so that I can have a guilt-free nighttime snack.

It is early days yet and I am still hopeful that the side effects will subside over the first couple of weeks. I'd be interested to hear how you get on if you feel like posting again.

Kath

The side effects are perfectly normal and show the medication is getting into your system - all side effect will improve with time. I had the same tummy trouble and it went completely after 10 days or so. Within weeks my appetite had improved so weight gain is a constant threat with them but only because you have the feel good factor and this in turn improves the appetite. If you eat more you will gain the weight. Eat sensibly and well and it shouldnt be an issue.

Its very difficult in the early days but please persist - they do work and you will soon feel much much better. Take care

Hi everyone,

I'm in my 3rd day of taking citalopram, and i'm quite relieved to hear others are expieriencing similar side effects. i have been shaking quite alot, like i have a fever - but i am a shakey person so i guess it's just being amplified. I have also had a funny tum, it feels like i've got period pains

But, I have completely lost my appetite. It really doesn't bother me at all, infact i'm glad i'm not craving food. however, will my appetite increase once I've been taking them for a few weeks?

If so I don't understand why i've been prescribed them, part of my problem stems from an eating disorder, anorexia, so if my eating patterns start to become erratic, i wont be feeling to good about myself. i've been given fluoxetine before and expierience no side effects, so it came as quite a shock first time a took citalopram
